And yes, public transport sounds better than it usually is. I travelled through the US for a bit, using ONLY public transport (greyhound, martha, what-have-you), and it was all very clean and had nice people in it. It's true though that it usually only pays off in highly populated areas.

Greyhound is public transport? Aren't they a private company or a corporation?

Let's put it this way.  Most places in the u.s. have no bus or rail system whatsoever, public or privately owned.

One of my brother's favourite quotes to paraphrase from Gavin and Stacey is:
A: Look, nobody speaks welsh in Wales.
B: But what about the signs!
A: You just learn to ignore them.

I should probably learn welsh pronunciations considering I have a welsh name which is spelt the welsh way (which is a royal pain to constantly have to spell it out to people).

In that case, there's hardly any public transport in my country either. Especially the inter-city networks of buses and trains have all been privatised.
So I guess my definition is more like "mass transport on a schedule", so that would even include domestic flights.

I live in the US. It really, really depends on where you are. I know my state (Rhode Island) has statewide public transit (mainly just buses), and Massachusetts has buses, trains, subways, and whatever else. I can't speak for anywhere else.

This is not to say that public transit is good where I live.

There are sparse counter-examples in populated coastal areas, but most other places don't seem to have much.  Indianapolis has a few bus stops that serve mostly as homeless shelters and a short rail line that nobody uses.  The rest of the state has absolutely nothing.  But from what I've heard, we're one of the worst major cities in the country in this regard.  Most major cities have some inner-city transport, but that's still not covering much ground.

Here all we have is a private cab company that costs way way too much. And a bus service that doesn't service the actual town since it's for the rural areas.

We've a rather terrible bus system and a rail no one uses. The buses to the city/universities are always packed; buses anywhere else are always empty. As for the rail, it's way overpriced so everyone who could afford it is driving anyway. The inner city has a light rail too; dunno how used it is.

Ultimately I'd call it "crappy" but sounds better than some of ya'll's :P

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Boston public transport is beautiful, really. Rhode Island is pretty good too - the buses are common and fairly frequent, and they have a train that goes to Boston for cheap.

But people love their cars, and you don't get any more decent public transport until NYC, and who even knows after that (beyond New York, I've found nowhere in the US with good public transport - though admittedly, I haven't been to the west coast.)

Of course, Auckland blew all that away. Their city buses were FREE. And everyone ran buses. Every major supermarket even had its own (free) bus line. It was crazy awesome.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/upshot/young-boy-wishes-join-girl-scouts-210130922.html
Actually yeah, this is a problem with people steadfastly refusing to realize there most certainly are GLBT kids. I was one. I would've absolutely loved to attend slumber parties as a kid etc, because then I might have had some friends/fun. At least the parents are good about it, but the title sucks:

"Boy wants to be a girl scout...."

I get that the news is trying to generate viewership, but damn.... That's not the issue and they know it. The title makes it sound like something someone did as a joke. Also the "number of gender identity disorder" children [transgender] isn't rising anymore than the number of gays is rising. We've always been here, but only now are we beginning to feel slightly safe enough not to hide our entire lives due to fear of criminal prosecution, commitment to mental institutions, lynchings, and being social outcasts, completely.... [rants for 20 minutes].

Fascism in the US.  I'm disgusted.

Go read =)

Honestly, I'm surprised things like this don't make the news more often. Though the organ may differ, ("the warrant comes out of my ass," for example), I've seen police use this line on American Citizens. It didn't just spring up over night. The fourth amendment is rather complex and is divided up into numerous categories of levels of suspicion as well as individual factual scenario categories. I'm honestly too tired to go into another legal rant right now at [looks at clock] 2:30 AM ish. Maybe later...?

Suffice it to say that there are exceptions to the 4th amendment's warrant requirement with a long history of case law and I don't see that these guys met any of them. ICE gets a lot of latitude near the border, but this was in [glances at article] Nashville Tenn.... Honestly, I'm amazed how this keeps coming up. I file a lot of motions to limine to supress unconstitutionally searched evidence. No one cares....

Boston public transport is beautiful, really. Rhode Island is pretty good too - the buses are common and fairly frequent, and they have a train that goes to Boston for cheap.

The train that goes to Boston isn't an RI thing; it's an MBTA train. Not sure what allows that set-up politically or whatever.

Public transit in RI really, really depends on where you live. I used to live about 25 minutes from college by car. By bus, I would first have to walk a half-hour to the bus stop (you aren't likely to have a very close bus stop unless you live in certain areas), ride the bus for another 40 minutes or so to Providence, and wait at the bus depot/plaza downtime for a variable length of time to catch another bus. The shortest bus from Providence to college (that last mentioned leg of the trip) used to take about 35-45 minutes as well, but a route was changed so the shortest one is now more like 20-25 minutes. So instead of a 25-minute ride, I had anywhere between a 90 and 130-or-so minute Magical Public Transit Journey. Oh, and that half-hour walk to the bus stop? For a decent length of it, it's along a fairly busy road with no streetlights or sidewalk, and a few curves, and drivers were not terribly careful. This was pretty dangerous at night, basically impossible after a heavy snow, and was mostly uphill on the way there... and not any easier while carrying a load of schoolbooks and/or a laptop.

This is neglecting to mention the fact that the public bus system has its fair share of creeps and Things Which Inexplicably Smell Like Things They Should Not.

So yeah, it really, really depends on where you live. Some places in RI, the bus system is extremely convenient, and in some places it's completely inaccessible. At the time, I lived in between those two extremes.

If you're not going to say what country you're from, it seems pretty pointless to specifically mention things about it.
