And seriously, Phmcw, it's a cultural thing.  At this point in the US it really should be done out of politeness.
I'm willing to believe this. Even though the thought of blaming the person initiating the conversation for not being considerate enough, rather than the receipent for being unable to respond in an assertive fashion seems rather odd to me, I've heard enough about the US culture of respecting one's "personal space" to see how one might emerge from the other.

I'll just pop in and say that I consider following double standards of courtesy to be sexist. I do not follow the notion that women need more personal space, that they should be tiptoed around more, or that language should be reigned in around them more than men (the latter is common and annoys me to no end). If there's courtesy to be considered, apply it to both genders or neither.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Ditto.

What was being proposed previously though is that we should treat women differently than men because of some danger of being a woman at night.  I don't hear men complaining about some woman talking to them on an elevator or while reading a book.  Why should women be treated differently?

What Vector said. It's kind of a dick move to zoom right by a jogger/bicyclist and come within inches of clipping them.

It's actually law here that if a cop has pulled someone over on the side of the road, you're supposed to get one lane over away from the shoulder. So the cop can do his job without the fear of being hit by a car. Those stinking job-ists. Why should we make special allowances for somebody just because of their profession, right?

The idea behind the premise in this whole conversation is that you should swerve if it's a woman, but who cares if it's a guy.  (or: Change lanes if it's a cop, but if it's a typical stranded motorist changing their tire... who cares.)

see:
Quote
All men. ALL men who have given sufficient consideration to women's position in our society do this walking trick. If you are a man and you do not know about this trick then there is a problem with you.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So now we decided to change the conversation to include every person, independent of sex?
Being polite/considerate doesn't have to be focused towards women. Id' say it should probably be general.... The world is a very cruel place and some consideration between people, regardless of gender, couldn't hurt, could it?

"Politeness is free; give and receive it...."
(I'm not picking you out or saying you allude to this, but in the general conversation this post fits.)

There are going to be some pretty busy crosswalks while people try to shuffle back and forth across the street to avoid walking up behind someone else on a dark night.  We may as well avoid talking to anyone on an elevator and asking them up (or for that matter, over to your place) for a cup of coffee.  We've turned into a society where everyone is afraid of everyone else because personal fears and it's alienating people to conversations and interactions.  The world we are steering toward is a dark place if this is the expected norm.

Vector is right I guess.
I like it better our way though, and wish society stop requesting women to be frail little things.
The natural difference between men and women is not that huge.

I don't speak for Vector, but I think many cling to the "frail little flower" view of women so that people don't try to use it as an excuse to justify rape/domestic abuse. "Why didn't you just fight back?" would probably be a common reply.

I still agree with you though. Women are far from powerless and subject to the will of men if said man so much as lifts a finger.

I think most of us don't like the, "frail flower," idea either. That said, let's be honest, there are a lot of ways a girl can be taken advantage of because she's a girl and they all suck as a rule.... :(

And then you end up with people wanting no girl in the army because they all suck as a rule.
Women that suck at fighting don't do sport, those who do are a tad less good than equally trained men in average, which mean that they can be pretty devastating. But because women can't have any visible muscle, and must be skinny, they are way weaker tan they should be.
At the end of the day you end up with an even more sexist society.

To be fair it's only some types of birth control.

Still pretty nuts though and not something I'd support.

It's more that "Mississippi is about to hold a referendum on a really poorly-thought out amendment which would create lots of thorny legal problems that its backers probably never considered."

Not trying to downplay the problem, but it's qualitatively different from the Mississippi legislature sitting around and saying "Hey, let's done git rid of all them pills what Charlene takes to keep us from having any more young'uns."

If anything, this is more insidious because a general ban on birth control would likely meet with stiff public opposition, even in Mississippi. But an amendment to "protect life"? People lap that shit up.

The group sponsoring this bill is also explicitly anti-birth control. What you see as a poorly thought out bill that inadvertently opens an issue with birth control, I see as a well thought out bill that intentionally raises legal issues with birth control in a way that might actually get passed into law.

I'm ever more and more disgusted with conservative extremism in America.  It's to the point that I fantasize about punching smug-faced fundamentalists in the face, which hadn't been a regular thing with me since high school.  Then I remind myself that such a response is pretty extremist in itself, and it's less likely I'll ever see sanity in our culture again if I fail to keep myself vigilantly grounded.... sigh....
