There's also often a lot of misogyny in large atheist movements, as well.

Why would you say that : it's plain false. Atheists usually despise misogyny.

Probably the elevatorgate thing?  Although Richard Dawkins was the main person who came off as sexist in that, and he doesn't really qualify as a large atheist movement on his own.

I'm not just talking about Elevatorgate, but I don't have any sources right now.  Next time something comes up, I'll fly it by.

I think a lot of it has to do with the apotheosis of evolution in place of religion, which in many cases often results in terrible misapplications of evopsych.

Apparently unmarried black women are a problem or something

Dudes (and possibly also women) sexually harassing the new female-voiced iPhone.  Good job.

So apparently corporations will be able to legally own slaves and shit soon.  Maybe.

There's sexists in pretty much every political movement. I don't think it's intrinsically tied to anything.

The only policy that falls under that explicitly would be abortion. Everything else... well I haven't heard anyone advocating policy to remove women's right to vote, or hold jobs, or whatever. I suppose a case could be made for those anti-affirmative action (as that often helps women in addition to other victims of prejudice) but that's getting awfully close to grasping at straws.

Save abortion, misogyny is not a major platform of any political movement I know of.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Probably the elevatorgate thing?
What's that?
Quick summary;

High profile atheist/sceptic blogger Rebecca Watson was on a panel at a convention of atheist/sceptic types about "Communicating Atheism". During the panel she said she found it sexist for guys she doesn't know to hit on her.

She then spent some time in the bar with a number of others from the conference before heading to bed in the hotel around 4AM.

When she left one of the guys from the bar (who she didn't know) followed her into the elevator. While in the elevator with her he asked her back to his room for a cup of coffee.

Needless to say this freaked her out a bit and she said as much in a video she made after the incident. Video here. Probably worth watching that and reading the first few comments to see the early response. In particular this exchange;
Quote from: Quaap
Not sure the guy in the elevator thing was an instance of sexualizing you, just an example of a bad way to approach someone.
Quote from: Rebecca Watson
There is a small chance that this man meant nothing sexual in his comment, despite the fact that I had clearly indicated my wish to go to bed (alone) and the fact that the bar had coffee and therefore there was absolutely zero reason to go to anyone’s hotel room to have it. Sure. There’s a chance.

But regardless, the point I was making was that people need to be aware of how their comments might make someone feel extraordinarily uncomfortable and even feel as though they are in danger. This person failed to recognize that even though I had been speaking about little else all day long.
Greg Laden outdid himself with a post going back to Rebecca's original point from that early comment. Sadly that whole debate was quickly overshaddowed by the shitstorm to follow.

The shitstorm started after Richard Dawkins made a few really, really stupid comments. This is a good place to read up on that.

A number of the feminists within the atheist movement condemned these comments, but a massive number of people came out in support of Dawkins and the guy from the original incident, claiming there was 'zero bad' in the incident and that Rebecca was deliberately creating a massive scandal to... well, not entirely sure. Most people are content to just attack her as an annoying woman who wouldn't shut up.

The level of misogynistic attacks involved in any discussion of the incident is incredible. A lot of previously respected individuals have lost all that respect. And a few have really distinguished themselves.

Frankly, the atheist/sceptic movement seem to think that they are the progressive ones compared to the nasty regressive/conservative religious groups, so sexism isn't a problem for them. After all, the oppose religious restrictions on women, so how can anyone accuse them of being misogynistic? That largely means that when people do start pointing out sexism within the movement the reaction is vitriolic and aggressive attacks against the accuser. And so the problems are never addressed and/or get worse.

I'm really hating corporate abuses lately.... Free speech seems to include bribery political payments of money, but the NYPD can shut you up for .... speaking in public.... Let's not even get into shove the protesters somewhere no one can see or hear them places "free speech zones." So to review, paying money = speaking; speaking =/= speaking.... Got it....

The easier fix is to update the law to include "No person or corporation shall...." That will never happen though, or at least not without massive backlash.

That said, it's a lovely absurd hypothetical to incorporate a person and then have them do all kinds of things an actual person couldn't. Pay the small extra taxes and just go nuts. Heck, Troy Davis, Inc. would have more rights than the person himself did aside from being harder to terminate....

Back to my "hide in plain sight" comment...

Besides there still being plenty of slaves in the world in the traditional sense of a person being the property of another person...

Corporations already own slaves, in the form of wage slavery.  The difference is we have some freedom in choosing our masters, and a very little amount of opportunity to one day become one ourselves, if we're the type who can live with ourselves in that position.  Traditional slavery is one individual owning another individual, and treating them like tools in their garage.  Wage slavery is a handful of people at Home Depot and all the tools on the shelves are screaming and begging to be purchased.

But my perspective is not a very popular one.

Who gets what for what?
Goes back to Aristotle (who don't get me wrong, could be a real jerk sometimes) actually, the argument between the rights of citizenry v. the rights of merit. Back in the day a large polis (city) had maybe 50,000 people and when the Spartans came knocking, everyone fought, had the same danger of dying, and thus had certain rights (this argument excluded slaves from the rights thing, sadly). That was compared against the idea that if you work harder you should get more.... Both ideas have merit. Hell, after 8 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars in school, I'll happily make the "I earn it and deserve more," argument.

That said, I don't like living in a world where I see yuppies playing on Ipads while ignoring the starving homeless man 3 feet away eating out of the bus station garbage.... That guy wasn't faking it and I bought a five dollar footlong oven roasted chicken breast from Subway for him.... Unfortunately all the social services are overwhelmed and there's jack shit to be done for him. I don't begrudge people their Ipads or whatever, but it really saddens me when I see such poverty juxtaposed against the backdrop of a modern city.

We haven't really figured out an answer in a couple thousand years, and I don't have one now. Wish I did.

Meh, the entirety of the right critics of this "elevatorgate" is that someone should treat that guys for his social awkwardness. Seriously.
There is nothing feminist in this story, just a guy who make a fool of himself and a girl who overgeneralise.

And then plenty of people who do both. Including Dawking and Greta Christina. Seriously?

But the

As a justification of Greta Christina's good intention was the most sexist thing I've heard toward men.

Sad to see peoples I usually enjoy reading make such fools of themselves.

Pretty much everything I needed to say about that stupid story.

The level of mysandry involved in her defence matched the misogyny, and the starting incident has nothing to do with feminism.
If anything, the lesson I've learned if that if you separate people into two camp, they'll behave like idiots.

stuff
Thanks, I appreciate the effort you put into getting all that info together.

I did not see misogyny in the incident in the elevator at all. There could've been serious missing of the point on the guy's side, seeing how he went on to hit on the woman after she talked in length how she doesn't like that, but I see no more gender-bias there than if it was another woman trying to get into the other's pants, or if these were two men, or any combination thereof.

The reason why this matters is because it's something that many women have to deal with all day, every day, from men--uninvited sexual attention.  No, it would not be a problem if people in general were more sexually forward.  The reason why it's a problem is because women are assumed to be the passive, automatically consenting recipients of masculine sexuality.

So, I've just one question: when a woman actually expects the man she's attracted to to be the active side, is she misogynistic or misandric?
