This vaguely touches on my rants in the Occupy thread.

A newsitem about slavery in the Netherlands. It's quite unknown, but thousands of bought foreigners are being exploited as slaves in prostitution, construction and agriculture. Now here's the kicker:
"One third of the interviewed people can understand that businesses choose for cheap labor".  ??? ::) :-\ :'(

And here I was, thinking we'd come such a long way. I apologise for any USA bashing I've done in the past.

Human trafficking is a blight on the world that leaves no region untouched. Slavery ain't dead, it just changed forms.

The socially conservative position on gender is misogynistic.
I'm not buying into this... From my experience in [dealing with | talking to | knowing] people who claim to be conservative (highly religious or not) do not favor someone simply because of sex.  It still feels like FUD.

Are you telling me that the conservative positions surrounding gender aren't misogynistic? At least in the US, traditional culture surrounding gender is very misogynistic. The regressive/conservative angle is the misogynistic one.

Are you saying that the liberal/progressive movement is also misogynistic? That boggles my mind.

I've certain seen some "progressive" or "liberal" people spout misogynistic things, but often as a side-effect of the more-obvious misandry involved, or otherwise very unintentionally (but still harmfully).

Example: Double-standards concerning who is/isn't at fault regarding accusations of rape (particularly date rape).

She makes some good points, but then she's doing so in order to score political points in the greater "conservative vs. liberal" war. So take with grains of salt as needed.

That isn't liberal/progressive misogyny. That is good old fashioned regular misogyny that happens to be performed by a liberal or progressive person. It isn't entrenched and codified in liberal/progressive policies and agendas.

It's not codified but there is sort of an unspoken understanding that when a woman is a conservative, particularly a hardcore one like Malkin or Bachmann or Palin, that the gloves can come off and the level of discourse is allowed to drop into the mud. But to me, it's not so much that it's misogyny as just a sort of partisan frenzy. You see a certain level of racism against conservative blacks like Alan Keyes (and now Herman Cain), if there were a prominent gay conservative you'd probably see homophobic attacks and innuendo levelled against them. Again, not because the Left is necessarily misogynist, racist and homophobic, but because each side has developed such a strong hatred for the other side that they reach for whatever low-hanging fruit is there to demonize them with.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Right isn't so much virulently misogynist, racist and homophobic as it is that their opponents have greater diversity and so they wind up resorting to those sorts of attacks more often than the Left, which is left hating on straight white religious males. A lot.

The hatred of everything different than oneself is a common trait of human being.
Therefore you'll find misogynists, racist, ... everywhere. The difference is that some groups reject it while other glorify it.
And so is fear of he unknown, preference for our owns and lack of care for things we don't see.
It's just hard-coded in humans being, you must choose to override those tendencies in order not to have them.
