Female high school football player sits out a game so the rest of her team can play when the other team threatens to forfeit instead of play against her.

Ok where the hell does this happen? The Middle-East of the USA? I can't really imagine any team over here forfeiting because there's a female player on the opposing team (though I do know one Waterpolo team that had to fight to play with a mixed team, but that was because for their age brackets the teams are officially single-gender).

Most likely they feel vaguely uncomfortable and so, rather than examine their expectations, believe there's something dreadfully wrong that they have to fight against. Which is to say I don't disagree with either of you.

Played one football game in high school where the opposing team had a female lineman (lineperson?).

I was incredibly disgusted with my teammate's conduct that night.  So much bragging from anyone who came in contact with her on the field about how they stuck their hands underneath her shoulder pads or something.   

On a related note, I have to admit that I was terrified of the thought of ever having a female opponent in wrestling.  Besides probably getting my ass kicked due to inhibitions regarding improper touching, I had basically zero physical contact with a female ever and had no idea how I would handle it.  One of the most basic tactics when pinning a person is to grind your chin into their chest to discourage them from bridging (raising ones shoulders off the mat mostly by neck strength).  I couldn't see things like that working out so well.

*shrug* what's the point of having mixed contact sports, then?  I say that the reasonable thing wouod be either ignore gender fully in that regard, and anything goes, or else segregate practitioners of said sports

If there were enough female players to form teams, they would segregate football. Problem is that you typically only get at most a handful of girls who want to play at a time. If you always say "you cant play with the boys" to every girl who wants to play, there will never be enough to play separately.

I personally prefer integrated sports anyway. If you have two leagues, there will ALWAYS be a "lesser" one and a "greater" one. This goes for school sports as well as professional; who actually watches the WNBA, compared to the NBA?

Hell firefox gives a spell check error with WNBA but not NBA. Guess one acronym wasn't good enough to put in their dictionary.

Yeah, it's not an easy subject.  Women shouldn't be denied participation, but then there are going to be issues.

For instance, I was pretty damn mature for my age.  I was very self-aware and disciplined compared to the vast majority of teenagers I knew.  This doesn't mean my hormones weren't raging like everyone else's, though.

I'm sure I could do this just fine as an adult, but as a teenager is rather unrealistic.

Besides, there's the whole problem with breasts being a.) A rather large target (stop snickering, even for A-cups they cover a significant part of the upper front torso) and b.) Sensitive (I've been told it hurts as much as a guy getting hit *there*, though it fades quicker). That makes contact sports problematic if you're not used to playing with female opponents because something that may not even hurt for a guy could be excruciating for a girl.

Um... They make cups for guys. Why can't they make an equivalent for girls? I mean, sure there are logistical problems, but still, it's an option, right?

I don't know, but they'd probably be too constricting for sports that also require upper torso movement and be uncomfortable. You're looking at a larger surface area and it'd need to be quite rigid to work effectively.

Thinking about it... I don't really see any problems with integration of any sport besides wrestling.  The type of contact there is very different from something like football.

Would it?  Slight padding wouldn't be too difficult to make.  Also females aren't necessarily made of glass - they can, y'know, withstand pain while playing these sports like men can.

Of course, but if they get hurt for the same thing that a man would shrug off, that'd put them at an innate disadvantage, which the referee has to compensate for, which brings in a whole other mess of problems. Or the referee doesn't compensate for it, which means that people won't want a woman on their team because she's easier to trump.
