I can't really say I'm disgusted. I mean, it's not pleasant, but this is absolutely not unique. This is how "games for girls" have been treated for as long as I can remember.
Not saying it's right, but... if you're around enough shit, eventually you stop smelling it.
I think there's a lot that could be changed to make gaming appeal more equally to both sexes even though it's starting to move in that direction in any case. (and I'm not even counting casual, facebooky and popcappy games)
Yes, the sexism could be toned down. We don't need so much 'fan service' as they say in some corners for games to be fun or to sell, but I think more and more, women are starting to look past it, ignore it. You have plenty of women now who are willing to have fun blowing up and killing stuff and not care if they're wearing a chainmail bikini
tm or being a man while doing it.
I'm sure there's an argument whether that's a good thing or not, but even if you don't consider ignoring the problem to be an answer, it's at least one possible first step. First prove to the companies that women are a market, (As is already being done, if the sources here are reliable
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_gamer although, I do question some of those numbers. (how many females who buy games are simply buying them for someone else.) then they'll start listening.
Boycotts won't solve anything in this case. Boycotts only work when the companies feel they're losing profits they already had. Many don't feel women compose a significant market share so are willing to ignore any calls for women to not buy their product, thinking that even if people listened, it wouldn't make a difference in their bottom line.
