Feh.

I don't really know how I feel about affirmative action.  I just think people should stop being assholes.

Oh! And then for added insult, turn around and start giving them out for free to anyone who wants one. White, black, yellow, male, female, transgender, whatever. Liberating those baked goods from the clutches of capitalism and then distributing to The People in a grand display of socialism. Epic lulz. Even better if you can get all the people you gave cookies to to come by their booth and say, "Hey, thanks for the free cookie."
Interestingly, unless you're a Native American woman, you'd be reproducing the USSR all over again... importing cookies from the capitalist Americans and giving away all your food until you're hungry and out of cash. ;)  If you were a Native American Woman, all they'd have to do it limit you to so many.

edit: eh, mistakenly pressed enter instead of deleting my post when I decided to not post it. All I was going to say was that I'm uncertain about affirmative action as well, but mostly I think the positives might outweigh the negatives in the long run.

This, so much this.
What is the exact cause of all this assholery? I have a hard time understanding why people continue to be racist in spite of all the people pointing out what's wrong with that.
Is ignorance really such a stubborn stain to get out?

People don't like to be wrong. So, yeah. By the way, I don't intend to imply that I am not among "people".

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Being prejudiced is extremely easy. Goes well beyond racism; that's just one of the more prominent forms.

Anywho, as for my opinion on affirmative action: I'd prefer it was economically based rather than racially/gender based. What affirmative action does is give people a lower barrier to entry, specifically lowering the monetary barrier. I'd much rather a worker class white male get a break on their tuition than an upper class <insert any race and/or gender here> with more than enough to pay for their tuition in the first place.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

That does make sense. And I'd expect that the new cries of "Socialism!" would be balanced neatly by the lack of cries of "Racism!"

I suppose it's a reasonable argument.  Part of the problem likely to occur (people selling cakes on) isn't a valid part of the analogy since you can't sell your university place to someone else, but I guess it does highlight the potential arbitrariness of a race-based system.

The admissions tutors could try to take into account whether applicants have had an underprivileged background instead (ie did they do well in spite of having poorer teaching/ social status) although that'd obviously be difficult.

I just had this conversation with somebody today and we agreed on this, basically.  It feels like a lot of racial issues surrounding admittance to colleges are really economic issues masquerading as racial issues.  That's not to say that there is no explicit racism, but if one race is in an economically worse position than another, it makes sense that students of that race would under-perform on average.  It's harder to target, though.  This is probably why race is used.

I'm also not so sure on the cries of socialism.  We already do give financial aid to people.  If done well, it could look like an expansion of the current system rather than some big socialist attempt by Obama to corrupt the youth and kill kittens.

It will never happen, but I would love to see the president come out and make a speech urging on and congratulating the protesters here in America and condemning the authorities suppressing them, in the same way he did for *some of the Arab spring protests.
