My personal experience with serotonin-based antidepressants is that they numb you. The lows aren't as low, and the highs aren't as high. I quit because even though I felt like shit, at least I felt something.

I second that. Especially given how many of them have committed criminal actions.

As far as antidepressants, when I was on Zoloft for a brief period I have to admit that the suicidal impulses and the sleeping 20 hours a day went away. But in that case, I question whether it was the meds or because something in me just finally snapped and said, "Okay, I can't do this shit. This has to get better." My accepting a referral to the psychiatrist (only after an intervention by friends and the RD at my dorm) was already a sign that I'd decided to get help.

I took myself off the meds after less than a month because although it did improve my general mood, there were two disturbing side-effects to it:
1. I had no sensation of the passage of time when sleeping. I'd lay down, close my eyes, open them, and it was morning.
2. I had no recollection or sensation of dreams. It was literally like I just "switched off" and then "switched back on" in the morning.

That felt unnatural enough to me that I decided I'd rather face my issues without pharmaceutical assistance than live life a a robot. Luckily, my depression wasn't deep-seated (and may have been triggered by beta-blockers I was on, which I also stopped taking). I'm aware that the cycle of "Hey, I'm better now, I don't need these meds" often leads to relapses or worse for people with chronic mental illness.

I thought this was a normal byproduct of sleep... ;)  When I wake up I don't know how long I slept without looking at a clock.

But you knew that you *had* slept. People can normally tell if they've been asleep a while, or "just dozed off" or whatnot. With the Zoloft, it was literally like I had time-warped to the next morning. I felt rested enough, but it was still disconcerting.

time warping nights happened to me back when i was a kid.
i would just go to bed, get straight, close my eyes and BUM MORNING.
i thought it was funny. quick away night, welcome morning. i'm your god now time.
...maybe that's why i still keep on rambling how i would enjoy becoming a deity of sort.

still, it passed after a couple of nights. never really delved into it.

That happened to me once that I remember. I was tossing and turning for quite some time, and around 1 in the morning, I leaned up against the wall, opened my eyes, and saw daylight.

It happens more often than you would think. There are people who go to the doctor complainig of insomnia, when they actually sleep well, they're just unaware of it

Something fitting for this thread:

Affirmative Action Bake Sale

Thoughts?

Hmm... is there evidence that ethnic groups have been disproportionately granted access to cookies along these lines? I can't help but suspect the people behind this either don't know or don't want to hear the reasoning behind affirmative action (which is, on the face of it, a highly discriminatory policy, and I hope that it will one day no longer be necessary).

But hey, Vector, 25 cents off for cookies! >____>

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This isn't even original. There's been a chain letter comparing affirmative action to exactly this kind of thing for years. Actually, I think there's even been some other numbnuts who had actual bake sales in the past.

I love the feigned surprise at the reaction by the Campus Republican guy. He might as well be saying "Y U MAD, COLORED PEOPLE?" while striking a trollface.

Hey Vector...I think you should wear a nametag saying "Dances With Quadratics" and clean them out as soon as they get started. After all, by their pricing structure, Native American women get everything free.  :P

The major downside is that they will equate sales with support for their view, rather than the actions of the laws of capitalism and people who disagree trying to exploit their pricing.

I wish them the best of luck gender-policing and race-categorizing without having their setup being lit on fire.

Seriously, what about mixed people?  Average across the two prices?  That could get dicey...

And you think that they're going to learn their lesson from...well, any outcome? This is a stunt, not a learning exercise. So fuck 'em....clean 'em out and leave them with no money to show for it.

Oh! And then for added insult, turn around and start giving them out for free to anyone who wants one. White, black, yellow, male, female, transgender, whatever. Liberating those baked goods from the clutches of capitalism and then distributing to The People in a grand display of socialism. Epic lulz. Even better if you can get all the people you gave cookies to to come by their booth and say, "Hey, thanks for the free cookie."

End result: Hungry college students 1, Self-righteous College Republicans 0.

You'd think this, but even when sleeping there's still certainly some level of brain activity and consciousness.

I only realized this as much as I do now when I had my appendix out. The general anesthesia didn't put me to sleep so much as it felt like I had been dead for two hours. No sense of time passing, no nothing. It's bizarre. Like I just didn't exist for a little while.

I wish them the best of luck gender-policing and race-categorizing without having their setup being lit on fire.

Seriously, what about mixed people?  Average across the two prices?  That could get dicey...

I think that would kind of play into their point, though. They're trying to point out that such a system is ridiculous and offensive, and comparing it to affirmative action. Not that I agree with them.
