Sorry didn't mean to sound snarky either, you might like to read the Colombia stuff, Bush was very keen on that administration (president Uribe might be the ONLY friend of GW Bush in south america)

Also google "UNASUR" and "CELAC" basically it's the European Union, but for Latin America. UNASUR is the 12 nations of South America under 1 parliamentary system, and CELAC is a 33-nation bloc of everyone in the western hemisphere except USA and Canada.

After reading up on it (UNASUR has been official since 2008, CELAC is more recent), wonder why NO major American newspaper or TV news has any stories mention it?

Not even the much-heralded New York Times or Washington Post?? Could it be that public knowledge of this is against US interests, and you cannot demonize an entire continent like you can with a single government like Cuba or Venezuela? Also Venezuela was a major proponent of unification, which goes against the US media campaign saying Chavez is a dictator.

Included in UNASUR is the "South American Defence Council" sort of like a hispanic NATO :P

I was going to say... it's fucking embarrassing that they don't cover this stuff in the news.

Ugh.

I love what this country theoretically stands for, but right now I kind of hate everything it actually represents.

In Australia we don't hear anything about it either, probably because most of our latin american news comes from Us-based media sources.

BBC and European news seem to have them most coverage, but we Australian's are too small to have our own reporters there.

On a positive note (for progressives): Colombia is now the ONLY conservative/right-wing government left in South America, with the election win of the socialist presidential candidate in the Peruvian elections. :) The entire continent is now wall-to-wall elected socialists or progressive/centrist governments.

If you want to take it to that level, Cuba is the only authoritarian dictatorship left in all of North and South America. 20 out of 21 countries democratic isn't that bad of a turnout.

Cuba can't match the bodycount of Colombia: 19,000 deaths a year, and that's just the official killings claimed/boasted by the army from 2002 - 2008. Colombia's government if anything is more Authoritarian than Cuba, far more likely to kill it's critics (those figures do not count people killed by the death squads, sources such as Washington Post claim that 70+% of violent deaths in Colombia were by the right-wing Death Squads over 40 years). Cuba's got major issues but at least they don't have rampant death squads running around.

Colombia is a democracy on paper, but opposition politicians are more or less guaranteed to be assassinated if they have any chance of winning.

Also the number of trade union members murdered each year in Colombia is greater than the rest of the world combined. This has been the case for at least the last 20 years, probably much longer.

EDIT: felt like linking a couple of death squad related links. To show whats happening right now.

"Black Eagles", Paramilitary group, Colombia

The extreme right-wing militias called the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC), which were created to help the army fight the extreme left-wing guerrillas, are far from being disarmed. According to official figures, a major programme for dismantling the AUC from 2003 to 2006 resulted in the demobilisation of 30,000 of its fighters in exchange for a broad amnesty. Most of them have turned to contract killing and drug trafficking, but between 5,000 and 8,000 reportedly regrouped in about 20 bands that resumed paramilitary activities in 12 departments.

The most feared of these armed groups, the "Black Eagles," continues to impose a reign of terror, killing journalists or forcing them to censor themselves or flee the country. This armed group has been responsible for many cases of intimidation and violence against the press in the Caribbean coastal region since late 2006. The danger it poses has since extended throughout the country and its targets include journalists who criticize the so-called "democratic security" policies launched by President Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) and still in force.

Reporters Without Borders has obtained a copy of a new message from the “central column” of the Aguilas Negras (Black Eagles) paramilitary group voicing threats against journalists, civil society figures and NGOs.

Dated 14 March and sent from a Gmail account in the name of “fenixaguilasnegras,” the message promises the “extermination” and “purge” of a wide range of organizations, including women’s groups, peasant and Afro-Colombian associations and human rights NGOs, many of whose representatives or members have been the victims of paramilitary terror in the past.

I'm sure the elders among U.S. leadership would prefer their public to be completely unaware of South America's existence, after the things they did there during the Dirty War period.  That history is still too fresh -- fresh enough that Blackwater was known to be hiring mercenaries for service in Iraq who originally trained in Pinochet's death squads with assistance from the U.S.

This post ends when your head explode. This is what makes your head explode:

Gah, I hate reading threads from the beginning, especially when they contain quite a bit of subjects I want to discuss. And normally I don't make a post like this to argue points that were brought up almost a hundred pages ago but...

If I were to ever meet ggamer in real life, I'd punch him in the face. Saying that homosexuality is a choice is just flat-out insulting to me.

Um....

Yeah, go back to whatever you guys were talking about. I just had to get that out; it was really bugging me.

It's been a very long while since I've been annoyed at someone on here to punch them in real life. It did happen in one instance though. I'd still probably deck said person, if I could remember who it was or find the thread in question.

It couldn't have been that bad if their username isn't engraved into your frontal lobe in 100-foot tall flaming letters for all time. I remember the full names of every single enemy I've ever had in my entire life, in both real life and on the internet.

By contrast, I tend to be forgetful of some of my friend's names after not seeing them for a few years. I think I might be a bad person.

I'm about 65% sure I remember who it is/was. Not quite positive, and I certainly don't want trouble by calling said person out atm.

I am sorry, but I do not see why that is insulting, and I certainly do not understand why it would deserve a face punch. It would only make sense to me if homosexuality was some variety of malady, but it is not.

The subject is a very personal one. I'd rather not go into huge detail about it here, but nevertheless it really struck a nerve with me. Plus, I don't think you saw this guy's posts. He was a real douche, to put it plainly.

Edit: Erm, sorry about the random derail.
