Saying that Mormonism is Christianity is like saying Halo is Modern warfare, just change the plot, the characters, and the setting, and the gameplay, and it's the exact same.
That comparison is shaky at best because the characters and gameplay of both Mormonism and catholicism are pretty much the same. Wait what?

I feel the need to inform you all that my Troll Alarm has been tripped by ggamer's recent contributions to this thread. Thank you, and good day.
I think he genuinely doesn't know what he's talking about. Hanlon's razor and stuff.

Yeah, we're basically dealing with a kid, maybe a 14 or 15 year old here, which is the only reason I'm even remotely putting up with the "homosexuality is a sin, so you're a sinner, but don't worry you can be forgiven by the God" stuff. He's really never been exposed to anything else/doesn't know better/how offensive that shit really is. Same thing with saying I'm "confusing" his religion for other types when I don't even know or really care to know what type of religion he is.

I can sorta take pity on the kid, cause I was raised in a situation like that, but probably worse. While it's offensive to be called a "sinner" I'm more upset with the people teaching their kids that I'm wrong and even need, "forgiveness." I haven't done anything wrong, but hurray for the "people judging me and hiding behind religion" brigade. That whole "judging me" thing and "taking concrete and repeated actions to mess up my life" thing they do.... "nothing wrong with that." ....

I do too. And there is a lot in there that reminds me of when I was 6 or 7 before I tried to reconcile what I was told and believed with what I knew.

I can't really think of any stories with 1 character the entire series focuses on. That would be a decent analogy. Maybe Star Wars? Though making Vader a Christ analogy would be a bit weird.

Setting and characters change throughout the bible, so someone adding addition books on top of it and decrying it for adding characters and settings is a bit silly. If you want more ties to "traditional" Christianity in Mormonism, there are plenty of claims of being visited by old and new testament figures (as angels) by the various prophets. One of Mormonism's big shticks is that revelation from God didn't stop; just went on hiatus.

As for ggamer "trolling," I haven't seen him attack anyone or be anything but as polite as possible with his beliefs here. A real troll would try to rile people up as much as possible.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Hey, you remember that time I was smart and witty? Yeah, neither do I. Sorry, i'll start to answer more straightforwardly instead of the half-trolling half-sincerity thing I've been doing up until now.

While he's straight up admitted he was trolling, he expressly apologized for it, and promised to stop/ has done the best he's able to not to continue. Moreover, he really hasn't been exposed to a whole lot/ is a minor so.... I say give him a pass for now; he's at least trying it seems.

How lovely, let's not let the transgendered child participate and call her being there "dangerous to the girls"

Boycott girlscout cookies to protest transgender inclusion? I think I want some thin mints....

@Truean:

You seem to have us confused with Mormons Catholics (Who aren't Christians Baptists. I mean really.)

On the topic of mormons:

Let's see, Mormon faith was founded because a man found golden tablets in his backyard, and the relationship to Christianity is... tangential, at best, and nonexistent at worst.

Catholics... Well, they ARE Christians (Like, the original ones), but I have personal issues with the whole Church Hierarchy thing...

@SalmonGod

My first thought was that he was a total Jackass, just from the look on his face.

(Also, Christians aren't really supposed to ignore science, but embrace it. It's where science tries to substitute God that relationships get rather strained.)

The mormons don't have leadership problems? Each "temple" is their own community/world that the patriarch commands, the label "mormon" is what groups all of them together. They are good at injecting spies into other religions though. Their kids go to catholic schools and the Knights of Columbus (catholic club) turn down so many applicants after they said they were mormons.

@Truean

Well, not quite. My stance is still quite liquid on homosexuality despite knowing that it's wrong somehow. I'm sorry if that's offensive, but besides praying and reading the bible I can't really say much more than that.

@Everyone

Okay, no. I am not some uncultured vagrant because I decided to abandon the premise of blatant hubris and decided to trust a power bigger than me. I am a Southern baptist, and while that name carries about as much negativity as a lonely Catholic bishop, it's the denomination I was raised.

I am rather aware of the differences between denominations, where the differences are not stupid or political. The difference between Catholics and Protestants seem to be a lack of a Church Hierarchy and less of a glorifying of the individual.

Also, there seems to be a consensus that this is me spouting off memorized christian litanies. I've actually argued with myself quite a bit over the interpretations that the bible can hold, and I pray that God helps me see things where I ignore them. So far, God's beating you guys on making me less confused about my religion.

@Tellemurius

As is becoming frequent nowadays, I'm going to go ahead and wheel out the "I know jack shit about this" stamp and liberally apply it to Mormonism.

Alright then just no offense but, as of current events i am now behind enemy lines (check my location).

Religion is always a bother for society, one glorifies one thing while the other spits on it.

I like Deism (and religions like it) since they only say "God made the universe how he made it. Science is just figuring out the how."
That's the most appealing view of religion I've ever seen and so has no place in this thread.

Deism has been around for a long time, and was quite reasonable back then. Check Jefferson's bible (yeah he edited it, and it's quite good).
But now, I don't see the reason why someone would bother to include the belief of a god in his world view.

I mean, what does that bring except hindrances and a few thousands paradoxes? Freewill, sin, omnipotence, ... are all problems that arise solely from the fact that you introduced a "god" in the system.
No god? Then freewill is irrelevant, sin is absurd, and omnipotence is back in the "useless concept" bag.

A cheap hope? No, not even, as that "god" could as easily give you absolute sufferance, as he could give you absolute well being. And I don't even see the point of an artificial absolute well being.

???
So, I'm just somehow vaguely wrong in some indecipherable way? <---- This is my problem. Its entirely impossible to defend myself against this completely vague, unfounded feeling in the back of people's mind that will never let them really accept me as a member of society no matter what. That's like being arrested, told you're wrong and not being told why ever.... O wait, we're right back to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base....

It's lovely to be fucking branded with some "you're wrong somehow," thing no matter what. Uuugh.... Lovely to know you're condemned without reason; it's really great going through life that way. Just knowing that no matter how much good, bad or indifference I do in life that there are people who will raise every generation of their family to think there's just "something wrong with" me.....

So far, God's beating you guys on making me less confused about my religion.

Dude, I'm gonna go ahead and say most of us here simply aren't Southern Baptist and thus don't know half as much about your religion as you do. Thus, I'm not sure we COULD make you feel less confused about your religion even if that was somehow our place....

It's hard to be confused by something what you never talk to and what can explain everything with "Because I can"

That is, if you buy into this explanation.

I believe the last time when someone said "religion is only a bother" was where Vector drew a line in the sand. Though it didn't really help that the person in question began actively calling for the decimation of religion. So maybe we have not yet crossed a line.

In any event, are we ready to stop talking about this yet? Because this religious conversation could go on for many pages. And it may be slightly hypocritical of me to try to end a conversation I willingly engaged in, however we've reached the point where none of us are saying anything new at each other, and we are merely repeating what we've already said. Every answer that can be given by either side is already listed in the last twenty pages (and if you're willing to go back even farther, we've had exactly this discussion on previous derails (and none of the arguments here are things that haven't already been said in this topic)), and all we will be doing in the future of this argument will be picking at each other on issues that no one here is going to move an inch on.

Or maybe I'm just a pessimist?
