Is there a reason why we can't have abortion just for emergencies?

When is it ever not an emergency? You've got a thing inside you that's going to tap into your arteries, rapidly increase in size for several months, mostly incapacitate you, force its way out--and, somewhere along the line, become a person, and be utterly dependent on you for several years. Either you're fine with that, or it's a goddamn emergency.

Regarding the rape campaign - not sure if I am comfortable with the slight implication that all men are potential rapists. I know its not really targetted at me (knowing 100% I am incapable of rape, which no-one need question please), but I do feel a tiny bit offended by it. A little like the slightly old tounge in cheek joke we have in the UK that goes along the lines of "Women - Know your limits"...

If it doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't apply to other people who are incapable of rape. So it only implies that people who are capable of rape are potential rapists...

I do have another objection to it though and that is that if she has to say no or clearly is uncomfortable, you've already gone too far, especially with partners that have trouble fending for themselves or that have low self-esteem. Basically, this campaign insinuates that it's not rape if she doesn't say no, which is a pretty damaging stance, because she could be very uncomfortable without outright showing it or even be too scared to object.

Maybe the CEO of ICE should get a return ticket for Colombia, with the polite request to give the ticket to the victim for the return trip?

This is coming from California which has not alot of good legislation since the past decade, half of them contradicted each other.

That might be the point though - make it seem as if you're doing something but at the same time do the polar oposite.

Ok, I don't like those posters.  Partly because it's patronising.  Mostly because I just don't think they'll work at all.  I mean... I understand putting up posters like that for crimes of opportunity that are likely to happen right near the posters (so for bike theft, car theft, vandalism etc) along with warnings about the ways they have to make sure you'll get caught and the potential consequences.  But really I can't even imagine a scenario in which these posters could possibly do any good since... well, I don't think those likely to commit rape will give them the slightest notice.

Well, one positive effect it may have is that it becomes easier for women to talk to men about the shit their significant others put them through.

Definitely in agreement. Not a fan of the usage of "strength" at all.

Awareness, my dear.
If the idea that no means no becomes more ingrained in the way people think, it becomes easier to seek council with your (male?) friends. Additionally, spreading the idea that it's the guy's job as much as the woman's woulc cause social pressure on guys that don't take no for an answer to (hopefully?) increase.
The posters won't have any effect in the act, but it could have effect on social dynamics in groups of friends. I believe the term "Social Engineering" was invented for this kind of campaigns.

I got something completely different from what you were saying there, so yeah. Okay. Glad I asked.

I believe the intent is education. You'd be surprised how many well-meaning people out there do not understand no means no; not because they're deaf or jerks, but they're under the impression that they're supposed to be dominant in bed. They think it's some sort of teasing.

There are a billion reasons for this, really. IMO one of the bigger ones is young men learn the most about sex from porn... and porn is most often made with male domination fantasies in mind. Teenagers and such most often do not understand this and think that's how things really go. That's one of the reasons I really like sex ed, and think that sex should be a vastly more open subject to talk about in the first place.

Cute story about an apparently gender-variant kid.
I don't believe the kid is trans (might be of course), but still an awesome story. Always good when non-conformity to stereotypes is protected.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
