There are things that should never be stated. The above post is one of them.

When I write it and it becomes a best seller you'll regret not having plagiarized me.

Back on topic: tangentially related to OWS: elections in Spain in three days. Polls say that despite the protests the two majoritary parties will stay, well, majoritary. So open question: will other Indignation//OWS movements elsewhere fare simmilarit, or is the concept doomed to fail?

To a good degree they have already succeeded. The entire national dialog has been shifted away from 'CUT EVERATHANG' to a more normalized concern about the actual economic conditions people are facing and the growing income inequality within society.

I don't know but my greatest fear is that it will be violently suppressed and America will be shown to be as savage and corrupt as Iran or Syria, and millions of Americans will cheer.

Trying to violently suppress Occupy is the best thing that could ever happen to Occupy, because then they become the victims. No matter your political views, once government employees start violating the Constitution to hurt peaceful protestors you are bound to have some (see: all of the) skepticism towards the government.

All right, folks, here's a warning.

Next person I catch engaged in passive-aggressive argumentation will also be yelled at.

Why do you think your word holds so much weight that "you'll get yelled at" can be considered a "warning"? Should I start calling you "Mom"? That's basically the tone you seem to be trying to pull off at the moment.

I mean, not that I don't agree with you, but seriously, having started the thread does not give you the right to patronize so heavily.

Well, she could just lock the thread if she doesn't like where it's going.

I think my word holds weight because people know I am doing the best I can to rule and to be ruled--though these things are, in truth, the same.  I do what I can to stop fights and create a space where debate in good faith can be carried out.  At the advent of this thread I was in a particularly good position to do this, as I had been extensively reading about the subjects at hand.  At this point, it is a matter of habituation, and of having been in enough internet arguments that I can usually see when they're spiraling out of control.  I threaten argument because my priority is to keep this space open for debate, for the good of the community.  Locking the thread and reporting to moderators both make that very difficult to do, and I feel that I have a responsibility not just to this particular thread, but to the subject discussed.  It is close to my heart.

If my best is motherly and haughty, then I am sorry.  I'll keep trying.

I understand your motivation. I just wish you would do it in a way that wasn't, I don't know, patronizing, as if you have both formal and personal authority over us or something. I mean, letting people know you're upset is cool, and telling them you'll have to lock the thread/report people/whatever if things get out of hand is fine too, but thinking that getting yelled at by you means something (or at least, means more than someone else yelling at them) or that you're otherwise in a position to scold them (or at least, any more than anyone else) makes it seem like you're trying to be less of a concerned peer and more of an authority with emotional power over people.

But again, I can understand your interests here in keeping the thread open and running smoothly and apologize if I'm overstating this or making too big a deal out of it.

Unfortunately, I think whatever you call the thread, you'll have "debate problems," to put it nicely. Someone is always going to disagree about the substance or tone of a post. Unfortunately most people can't handle it; hence our current political screaming environment.

http://news.yahoo.com/flier-sues-southwest-says-owed-45-free-drinks-001936316.html

I hate Southwest Airlines. This man is absolutely right and the comments opposing him are wrong. The drink ticket coupons are a contract, namely part of the ticket price. You had an offer, acceptance, consideration and bargain for exchange/Meeting of the Minds. Contract.

"The plaintiff Adam Levitt said Southwest had for years awarded customers like him, who bought tickets through its premium-priced "Business Select" program, hundreds of thousands of coupons for the drinks, which would otherwise cost $5 each."

That "premium-priced" means he paid for these drinks in advance. You wanna change your policy, fine. You can't do it retroactively, but only to future policy. Those tickets, had no expiration date, or any date....
"Southwest decided that it would make more money -- improve its 'bottom-line' -- by choosing not to honor the coupons that consumers had already paid and bargained for," said the complaint filed on Wednesday in Chicago federal court.

Yup, he's gonna win this case. He'll probably get class action certification for plaintiff numerousity, and commonality. Airline should know better. Really, this is called "why do I need a lawyer/ No one checked with legal before marketing issued hundreds of thousands of coupons/contracts."

Look at all the people calling this guy a leech and saying he's after a free lunch. No. He already paid for it and they aren't giving it to him.... Because, corporations are the infallible Gods of our time, the wellspring from which all good flows. They're never bastards who rip people off.... That's the mindset of a lot of people today. Southwest is looking at very real loss of millions of dollars, because of the "cut everything, it's the best way," ideology. No.

I haven't been able to /find/ a comment opposing him, hah! Everyone is like "a deals a deal" and "southwest needs to honour its contract". When you've even got a consensus against you among anon internet commenters, you know you've done something wrong. Foo on you, Southwest.

There are tons of comments against him.

Sounds like a classic case of corporate hubris to me, but Southwest doesn't look like it fits that description too well. They may just be testing how far they can go instead, because obviously voiding a lot of coupons saves them a bulk. Makes me wonder how many cases of this came before in which the victim did not press charges.
