Yeah, I would've loved to have been a boyscout when I was a kid.  I was already hanging out with boys, wearing masculine clothing whenever I could, and sitting at the boys' lunch tables and doing my damndest to eradicate all things girly >:I  I would've cut my hair much sooner, down to a crewcut or something, but my mom said I had to make a doll to put it on.  This was back when she was still forcing me to learn how to embroider.

God, I hate dolls =/

Oh well.  I am what I am.  This is how it goes.

Is there a big difference between boy- and girlscouts? I was never part of the Swedish scout movements and never really talked about it with friends who were in it but I'm 93% certain it's bisexical. At least that is the impression I got.

Anyway. You should start a bisexical scout movement as well, for people who don't live 60 years ago.

There's a girl scouts here, but they pretty much only sell cookies (as far as I see, anyway) and aren't nearly as prevalent as the boy scouts.

They do camping/etc. like the boy scouts... it's just that they are known for the cookies.

Hrm, I don't doubt they do other stuff, but I do see the boy scouts out doing community service projects and things visible around town. 'Tis all I meant by that :)

well, I'd prefer my kid to get a head-start in the wonderful world of economics than to know how to make a camp fire from nothing.

I was just pointing it out.  It's not as prevalent (the camping aspect) for the reasons we were just discussing.  Boys are encouraged to be "outdoorsmen" so Boy Scouts have a bit larger attending list.  One aspect I respect of the Girls scouts is their acceptance of non-God following children where the Boy Scouts are (last I checked) still very focused on Catholic/Christian beliefs and followings.

Here there is quite a big difference (in terms of who gets to go camping and stuff) but girls can join scouts.  And boys can join the guides although it pretty much never happens.

So there's no real difference? They do the same things?
...Why haven't they made them the "scouts" already. If they're the same things, it's not like people can go "we don't want any girls levelling up their survival skill" or vice versa and there's no reason to have them as separate groups. If it's prudishness that's in the way, it's not like the boys and girls have to sleep in the same tents even if they go camping together as one group. It's just silly.

@Leafsnail - "Guides" are girlscouts I presume?

Wait, you think selling cookies is better than learning magics?

Scouts.

Girlscouts.

I would have fucking loved to have had the above experience.  Just... man, I was reading "the boy's guide to electronics" or "The American Boy's Handy Book" all the time, over and over, when I was younger.  I would've loved an opportunity like that.

The latter experience?  Yeah, no.

Merit badges for boys, merit badges for girls.

Yeah.  But it seemed odd to call them girl scouts while explaining that boys can join.

Yeah, the Boy Scouts are very religious in their methods. The oath even has you to pledge to "God and my country." I look back on it and sort of cringe a bit that I was being made to say that kind of stuff as young as I was and before I even had a real sense of what it meant. By the time I could have understood it it was just a set of words I had to repeat. (A lot like the pledge of allegiance when I had to say it every day in school, it lost its meaning completely to me until about high school where I declined to say it any longer)

I honestly wouldn't suggest it for anyone these days. If you want your kid to learn about outdoors and camping. Take them camping. They'll get more out of it that way than they will with the scouts.

Girl scouts may have changed, but most of the anecdotes I've heard relate to them being much more focused around cooking than anything else. Granted, all of these anecdotes are decades old.

I know there are some non-religious and co-ed groups that allow boys and girls to be in the same groups. They don't tend to have as large as a following as the scouts do though and many of them are limited in the areas they cater to, while almost everywhere has a scout troop or two.

Also, Vector. It was rarely that fun. Although a lot of it did depend upon the local leadership. Our group of adults was generally pretty lazy. They didn't do much at the meetings and the 3 or 4 campouts a year that they had, they didn't really plan any activities. It was just. We get there, set up the tents. They go off and do their stuff while they let us sit around and waste time. Around dinner time we'd all help gather wood and they'd start a fire. We'd all do something simple like roast hotdogs. (occasionally something a bit more complicated, but only had that happen once or twice.) After that, more wasting time till they told us to go to bed.

There was a regional thing every year that they took us to that was planned by someone else that did have some decent activities though. But even that was kind of underwhelming and they took so many pains to "keep us safe" that we rarely ever got to do anything beyond tying knots and walk on trails. A lot of the time, rather than doing something, we'd answer quiz questions from the manuals rather than prove we could do an activity, if we could quote the process, we'd be counted as if we could do it.

Despite all that though, if you wanted to do it, I feel you should have been able to. Just know that there really wasn't anything special about it.

Boyscouts have "businessmen badges" too, you know.  They also learn how to make product, rather than just sell cookies and promote diabetes.

Sluissa, that would have been more than enough.  Better than the embroidery and sewing I was stuck with at home.

We did sell popcorn, caramel and otherwise. It was generally not that good though.

I don't feel like I was ever encouraged to really get any badges in the boyscouts. Only one they set up for us to do was some stupidly simple "fitness" badge that just involved us doing a certain number of sit ups, push ups and chin ups and possibly running a certain distance.

Cub scouts were a bit different. Lots of activities, but a lot of them were simple and I never felt like I learned much from them.

Edit: I wouldn't blame the boy scouts for not allowing you so much as the environment you were raised in that pushed you to do the embroidering. Even if the scouts didn't let you in, if you were raised in a different environment, you could have easily done and learned those things in other ways. Still, it's stupid that they still have to separate the groups these days and there's so much of a difference in what each group does and what resources they get.
