Formerly, if a pregnant woman was brought into the emergency room, dying, and could have been saved by an abortion, the hospital had to give it to her.

Now they don't, whether or not the baby is alive or dead.

The dictionary definition tells you nothing about the common usage.  I have never heard it used for straight men.  Effeminate gay ones and women, yes, but never anyone who had a traditionally male presentation, whether they slept around or not.

I believe the usual word for men is something more like "player."

I have a friend who is called a slut regularly. Very much not effeminate gay. Its mostly because he still dates high school girls.

This is much more important.  Fuck those assholes.  Fuck them.
I don't get that law? Was is previously forbidden to euthanize a pregnant woman or something?

Yes, but that isn't the issue. This overrides the legal necessity for a hospital to perform life saving procedures in an emergency.

It has nothing to do with euthanasia one way or the other. It's about doctors being able to deny life-saving procedures.

So if the hospitals don't want to do abortions, they can choose to not kill a child, even when both the child and the mother will die if they don't abort it.
...Because to kills are better than one?

I mean seriously. They're effectively "aborting" the woman and the child dies as well. THERE IS NO LOGIC HERE.

edit: added quotation marks because I did not seriously mean abort as in a real abortion.
editedit: that is, I mean, "pro-life" people say abortions is murder, and this is effectively my-- oh dammit I admit it was stupid. ;)

Sure there is logic here.

Abortion is a sin.

And letting the mother die is just sending a sinner to hell.

Its JUSTICE! in the eyes of the American Christian Taliban.

What other reason would there be to deny a live-saving operation?

I don't think you grasp what's going on here. The idea is that a physician can deny a life-saving operation not because he wants the patient to die, but because he feels the procedure itself is somehow immoral. The idea is that aborting a fetus is not worth saving the life of the patient.

Euthanasia has the goal of ending the patient's life. This is denial of a procedure not in order to end the patient's life, but because they disagree with the procedure.

As far as I know you can't, in fact, deny a lifesaving intervention.

The reason is that the life saving operation is an abortion.

Which is what the act is changing.

My mother has actually worked part time at a catholic hospital as a midwife, and from what I understand the doctors there hate giving abortions even when it's an emergency.

She once nearly had a patient die because a doctor was refusing to do it, and the other doctor on call who would do it was missing.
Eventually the other doctor showed up and did it, but they were really panicking for a while.

This wouldn't require them to keep a doctor around to do the procedure, and Dr. Asshole could then let a patient die while in labour.

As far as I know you can't, in fact, deny a lifesaving intervention.
Which is what the act is changing.
The Emeregency Medical Treatment and Labour Act prevented this, but this law overrides it. Maybe the supreme court will save the day... Of course it can only do that after lives are lost.

Hadn't seen the link. It seems a rather bizarre proposal. Would be nice to know the details, though

Either way, it goes beyond law. Regardless of whether the bill passes or not, someone who did such a thing would likely end up facing a deontological comission (which is serious business)

Liking someone more or less because they get laid often is downright sexist if you ask me

What sense does this make? If you judge people based on their sexual activity, but don't judge differently based on their sex or gender, how in God's name is that possibly sexist? You can call it despicable, but it's only "sexist" if you don't apply the same standards to everyone.
Hmm, you're right. If there truly is someone who doesn't believe in the "lock and key" bullcrap, but still disrespects people based upon how often they get laid, then he would not be sexist (at least not on this point), but just a complete dick.
Being called dick twice in a single day. Well, if that isn't a new record...
Also the term in this context would be "sleep around" and not "getting laid" I believe.

All right.

What is inherently worse about a person who has safe sex with a number of different partners?

The same thing that's inherently stuck up about a person that prefers monogamy.

The thing I find with "slutty" people, which is a term I use for guys as well as girls, is that they try to sex everything up, and generally aren't that interested in actually getting to know someone.

That isn't the same as sexually promiscuous though. I don't mind people having sex with a lot of people, it's when they're purely interested in sex that it gets to me.

But dressing "slutty" is something I perceive as people just, showing off. A lot of people might interpret it that way, but I don't.
