Ah, memories (that was my Facebook profile picture for about a year). Love it.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Ah, gotta love cheap sectarian snipes.

Other than that... well, firstly it misrepresents the case (remember part of the problem is that the woman was very obviously was not a minister, wheras reading this article you'd think she was) and secondly it's slippery slope fallacy all the way.  Also, to be honest I don't feel much sympathy for sexists even if they're trying to use their religion to justify it.

"On blogging threats and silence"
This kind of thing is why I'm reluctant to disclose anything more than my approximate location. Anonymity certainly has it's perks, but it's a bit of a double edges sword. There are a lot of people who will be abusive on the internet just for kicks, and I've heard stories about people getting abusive phone calls even when they weren't doing something like blogging about a "controversial" subject.

I imagine when you run that kind of blog it's much worse though.

More on how to eat and feed your body.  I like this woman.
*sigh* I really need to fix my diet.

It's legal to beat your partner or spouse in Topeka :D
I believe this was brought up twice before now, not that it's not still relevant.

I found this sort of interesting--women in priesthood issue.

Discuss.

Separation of church and state means that religions do not get a free pass to break the law.

This means you can't fire an employee for filing a legitimate legal action even if that is official church doctrine.
This means that fundamentalists are not allowed to beat their wives with a rod as thick as their thumb even if that is official church doctrine.
This means that the church of Scientology can not put 2 bullets from an .45 caliber handgun in your head for exposing church secrets, even if that is official church doctrine.

Allowing religion special exceptions from the law sets a very dangerous precedent.
Religious organizations should have their tax free status revoked until they provide proof of non-profit status.

Actually tax break for non profit organisation is maybe a bad thing.
Did you know that Ikea use that status for tax evasion?

I had no idea, how does that work for ikea?

I also have a completely unrelated question, but no really good articles to point at.

What do you guys think of Herman Cain's 9-9-9 plan? Or the fair/flat tax proposals that some libertarians are advocating?

Possibly. ;) Though the "fair" taxes I have seen tend to be flat income taxes that have size of household or poverty level income exemption. That is certainly more fair less unfair than the 9-9-9 plan that puts a MASSIVE increase in taxes on the people least capable of paying them along with a MASSIVE decrease in taxes on the people most capable of paying them.

edit: word choice is important.

I know this one hasn't been posted yet.  I don't know if it's "thread appropriate", but I for one consider keeping firearms away from drunk people to be a Progressive issue, since it certainly appears to only be Conservative legislators arguing for allowing people to bring firearms into bars.  Lo and behold, a cosmic news story - a member of the Tennessee state legislature who sponsored just such a law was arrested for driving drunk, with a loaded gun at hand.  Because even if it was legal to carry a gun into a bar, it would still be illegal in Tennessee to handle a gun while drunk, let alone a car.

They have he most complicated status in the world, and somewhere along the line, they "are" a non-profit organisation based in Holland. But not really. It's quite confusing.

Here the exert from wikipeadia :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another very dubious example is the "Bill and Melinda gate foundation" that look more like a tax free investment society than a charity organisation.
