I completely recognize and agree with your right not to participate in a marriage that would upset you, but I'm going to need explained the logic that leads to making that choice for other people - you need a pretty good reason, I'm thinking, to infringe on another's freedoms like that.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

in italy, politicians don't even know WHEN COLUMBUS discovered america.

You know, it's possible that not every nation on Earth blindly idolizes him like the US does.
Just jumping back to this for a bit: You do realise shadenight is Italian, right? And that he would be in a much better position to tell whether or not that would be something you ought to know in Italy?

Oh hey, Columbus Day is today. Glad we stopped celebrating widespread death.

Well, here's an idea for you: why are you trying to get marriage? Don't even bother with that. What you want to do is to separate church from state, right, because you'll never convince the majority of the people that you'd need to convince to get it from the religious side, so remove marriage from your equation. Make it civil union that you want. Then you've got nothing for the religious people to attack you on.
Recently, people who think gays should be allowed to marry became the majority in the United States.

but even more than that, they asked politicians around, stopping them for a while from entering leaving the parliament, the following things:
foundation of rome
discovery of america.
the taking of the bastiglia
the french revolution
the october revolution.
and i must say, i didn't realize the october revolution was done in the 1600s or america discovered in the 1800 century, or the bastiglia in the 1669.
so yeah. it's that bad.

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Did they just ask them the /dates/? What's the point of that? Who cares if they know pointless dates?

That's not a politicians job. No, you ask them about something and give them 15 minutes to get the answer from the person of their choice. If they can do THAT consistantly, you've got someone who knows what his job is and is good at it. And I'd expect the questions to be significantly more complicated than a date too.

Not to say your politicians aren't terrible, but I very much doubt that is the reason why.

Yeah, there's no reason whatsoever for politicians to have basic education or be familiar with what is otherwise common knowledge.

one thing is to not know the exact day and year, the other is to miss the date by more than 3 centuries, instead of having the humility to admit they don't know

I'm not sure what the best place to put it is, but this being the thread for talking about women's rights and such, it's as good a place as any.  If you haven't already heard - Kansas is on the verge of decriminalizing domestic battery, since the Topeka-seated county District Attorney has said his office will stop prosecuting misdemeanors in response to budget cuts.

When a government can no longer afford to enforce the law, and responds to that shortfall not by raising revenue but by throwing up it's hands and saying "beating your spouse is now legal", we are officially staring into the abyss.

I kinda figured it would be the case, but I really don't keep up on this thread.  That's my problem.

The city is basically attempting to throw the work of enforcing it onto the state government.

Wait, what? They're legalizing that because of "budget cuts"? I'm not sure what to say anymore...

No, it's not legal. They just won't prosecute you. They're hoping the state will, but the state doesn't have much funding to spare either.
