There actually used to be a fair number of Ontarioans (Ontarans? Ontarese?) in the Triangle, due to the presence of Nortel (who I actually worked for for a short time).
But suddenly, bankruptcy.
More like suddenly, horrible executive mismanagement. The CEO (can't remember his name) was a total waste of oxygen.
I'm torn on the game tonight. I actually like both teams. Don't get to see Vancouver much during the year, but I've liked what I've seen of them. Actually, I tend to like all the Western Conference teams that aren't Detroit. And I developed a grudging respect for the Bruins after the Canes went a 7-game series against them a couple of years ago. Was delighted to see the Canucks beat the Red Wings, and to see the Bruins crush the Flyers. Should be a good game.
Now, back to the rage.
@Africa: I can, but only if there was a major breakdown in the Federal government, causing them to be unable to effectively use the military to enforce their authority. It'd have to be some kind of massively divisive social issue which was also geographically delineated. That is, if it's going to be something like gay marriage or abortion, it's going to have to break down where there's one mostly contiguous block of states for each side. It's hard to imagine an issue like that with modern American demographics. If you look at a political map of the US, the coasts are blue, the middle and the Southeast are red. The three most likely candidates would be the Pacific Coast (the
Cascadia movement), the Southwest (the Vos de Aztlan and La Raza movements), and
New York City, probably one of the best candidates in the world for a modern city-state.
@olemars: Alaska and Texas both like to talk big, but the fact is that (despite all the Palin rhetoric), Alaska sups at the government teat like few others can. Last I checked they're #3 or 4 on the list of states that take in more Federal spending than they contribute in taxes. Texas is about at the breakeven point, but is a minor net "donor". (something like $0.95 in Federal spending for each tax dolar contributed). Texas has a better chance than Alaska of making it on its own, but IMHO one of two things would happen:
1. They'd be swamped in Mexican immigrants and become a de facto northernmost state of Mexico.
2. They'd clamp down the border and pass tons of anti-Hispanic laws, and experience a mass depopulation as both immigrant and native-born Hispanics flee the state, leaving an Anglo rump population and devastating the economy.
