I know that there's a lot of Canadians who winter near my grandparents trailer in Texas.

And Boston should totally win. Fuck Vancouver. I'm a Wild fan, so I'm contractually obligated to dislike the Canucks.

Canucks will totally win tonight.  :)  I feel it in my blood.

Does anybody think there's a significant chance in the next 100 years of a sizeable chunk of the USA seceding?

I say sizeable because only a very sizeable chunk would in fact be capable of pulling it off.

I don't really, but you never know with these things.

Not really, but a 100 years is a long time, so who knows!

Maybe they'll have to sell off pieces of the country as some form of payment on their national debt though.  I don't think they have any plan on how to start reducing it.

Doesn't Texas have a referendum on that every now and then?

There actually used to be a fair number of Ontarioans (Ontarans? Ontarese?) in the Triangle, due to the presence of Nortel (who I actually worked for for a short time).
But suddenly, bankruptcy.
More like suddenly, horrible executive mismanagement. The CEO (can't remember his name) was a total waste of oxygen.

I'm torn on the game tonight. I actually like both teams. Don't get to see Vancouver much during the year, but I've liked what I've seen of them. Actually, I tend to like all the Western Conference teams that aren't Detroit. And I developed a grudging respect for the Bruins after the Canes went a 7-game series against them a couple of years ago. Was delighted to see the Canucks beat the Red Wings, and to see the Bruins crush the Flyers. Should be a good game.

Now, back to the rage.

@Africa: I can, but only if there was a major breakdown in the Federal government, causing them to be unable to effectively use the military to enforce their authority. It'd have to be some kind of massively divisive social issue which was also geographically delineated. That is, if it's going to be something like gay marriage or abortion, it's going to have to break down where there's one mostly contiguous block of states for each side. It's hard to imagine an issue like that with modern American demographics. If you look at a political map of the US, the coasts are blue, the middle and the Southeast are red. The three most likely candidates would be the Pacific Coast (the Cascadia movement), the Southwest (the Vos de Aztlan and La Raza movements), and New York City, probably one of the best candidates in the world for a modern city-state.

@olemars: Alaska and Texas both like to talk big, but the fact is that (despite all the Palin rhetoric), Alaska sups at the government teat like few others can. Last I checked they're #3 or 4 on the list of states that take in more Federal spending than they contribute in taxes. Texas is about at the breakeven point, but is a minor net "donor". (something like $0.95 in Federal spending for each tax dolar contributed). Texas has a better chance than Alaska of making it on its own, but IMHO  one of two things would happen:

1. They'd be swamped in Mexican immigrants and become a de facto northernmost state of Mexico.
2. They'd clamp down the border and pass tons of anti-Hispanic laws, and experience a mass depopulation as both immigrant and native-born Hispanics flee the state, leaving an Anglo rump population and devastating the economy.

Alaska is a welfare state, unquestioningly. They let the oil companies do whatever they want and every citizen gets paid for living there. To review, Oil companies go nuts, everyone gets a couple thousand dollars a year in payment.... Environment gets raped....

This is separate and apart from the Exon Valdez Oil Spill, which despite Exon having more cash than it knows what to do with, still has uncompensated victims over a decade after they won in court.... Then they went to the U.S. Supreme Court to complain that "well it just seems like a lot of money to pay." The bullshit legalese is called, "Remittitur." The God damn Supreme Court actually looked at the case rather than kicking the Oil Company in the teeth as it should have....

BP does the exactly same thing. It also will not pay the victims fully, because they will starve you out to the point where you will take ANYTHING and this is called a "settlement." Allegedly, you are getting paid sooner this way, but what we mean is you're getting paid, "now" instead of "never."

It's not even a "pro business thing" or if you think it is, you need more oxygen intake, because fishing was a huge business which was ruined by oil spill.... Translation, Oil = business we should care about and cater to in law. Fishing = screw you fishermen....

It is very easy to make a hollow promise that "BP will take full responsibility." The claims process is an utter nightmare where you might not get paid for YEARS if you do at all. $20 billion is absolutely nothing compared to the damage they did, but more or less this is probably all BP will end up paying. Meanwhile a claims victim has to try to pay an attorney's office and the attorney doesn't wanna deal with this bullshit either. BP purposefully makes this more difficult than pulling teeth, which means a lawyer can't just do it cheaply because it takes forever and is difficult as hell. The reason the lawyer is forced to charge so much for collecting against BP is that BP purposefully makes collecting against it a god damn tentacled nightmare you can't even wake up from in a cold sweat....

Nobody thinks roughly the same set of southern states might try to secede again over basically the same issue (federal control?) I mean yeah they got schooled before, but Confederate flags are still flying. Another few liberal black presidents and we might just have ourselves Round 2.

It was partially about federal control. Economics and slavery were also a big part of it. As for the Confederate flags, that doesn't have anything to do with seceding anymore. The flags are more of a cultural statement these days. "Confederate" has become a bit of a statement as well, used by some to be seen as "True Southerners". North Carolina, a former CSA state and recognized part of the Deep South, voted for Obama last election cycle. The South doesn't want to secede from the Union, despite what some people usually think. If anything, patriotism is stronger down here.

Another? Oh right, I forgot how Socialist Barrack Obama is meant to be.

If the Right-Wing becomes stuck in a minority long enough I think they really might try something. Then again, so might non-conservatives if we get more borderline-totalitarian crap with another round of Bushism added to the current wave of Republican douchery. The ideological split doesn't look like it'll stabilize any time soon. The rift is simply too wide and we're in the middle of an economic hole as opposed philosophies butt heads over how to fix the problems when they can't even agree on what the problems are. Not that compromise would necessarily be a good thing... Reality will always punish bad policy.

Rough times for America.

Screw sidewalks, Eight lane bridges collapsing over the Mississippi....

It was all over the news for like ... less than a week. Then celebrities started adopting 3rd world children and we all forgot about it. What bridge? There's no bridge there. Exactly....

It was all over the news for quite a while, since it happened just a little while before the 2008 Republican National Convention was planned in the same town.  By the way, bridges are a serious problem.  Years of constantly cutting infrastructure maintenance budgets at the state and federal level have left about 25% of America's bridges in serious disrepair, and that number is only based on the incredibly spotty surveys available in 2009.

Nationally I'm sure, Cleveland is a strange news market though. It was a big story for a bit, then it just shifted to little "update" segments on the news. That's probably specific to my local area though. You have to remember, LeBron James was still huge then. He was the only sports star we've had since at least 1997 so he got at least 1/4 of every newscast. Interestingly, after "The Decision" (him leaving) he also got 1/4 of every newscast but you know... less praise and more hate. :)

Also here's BP starving some people out with the claims proceedings:
http://www.fox8live.com/news/local/story/BP-spill-victims-say-they-re-barely-hanging-on/lKuhhJMeoE2Bz5wi9wURyg.cspx

And that's from Fox News... "fair and balanced...." lol
Check the date on that story: Last Update: "2/16 6:36 pm ." That's 2/16/2011....
