My fort is too... steady.
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:13:59 pm »

This is my fourth fort, I'm a quick learner but not usually this quick. I have a steady food, beer and adamantine supply coming through. My military seems to have super human powers, because I've only ever lost eight dwarves throughout three sieges. One of which they actually brought their demon leader.
My horrible, horrible hospital is still keeping dwarves who were actually horribly wounded in battle alive. My trap defense, which is the following: One layer of stone traps, one layer of cage traps, another layer of stone traps and then random traps are taking down entire sieges by itself. Every time a forgotten beast or titan has appeared one or two dwarves alone have taken them down.
I don't want to just abandon my fortress, because that wouldn't be fun. But the fort itself is not providing any FUN.
What do you crazy overseers suggest?

Traps are easy mode. Get rid of them, or use them very sparingly.

Breach the caverns, and move the entire fortress down there.

For best results, undesignate all your food stockpiles before remembering to move it down as well.

I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

Dig out all the Adamantine, and turn it into blocks to build a castle aboveground.

I've already breached the caverns. Using Runesmith I've found that I have a shitload of monsters down in the deep caverns. They vary from giant cave spiders to pond grabbers.
I've breached hell and if nothing happens in the next couple months ingame I'm removing the wall and moving my entire military down there.
If they survive that, then let them live their boring life.

Use Runesmith to to switch on the 'zombie' flag for half your awesome military, then turn it off again! The dwarves remain the same and un-zombified, but they stay hostile! :D
Um, back-up your save first... :P

That's if you don't want to fight the clowns for their candy, which should be far more awesome.

I'm fighting the clowns. I've decided that if they deserve such a docile fortress then they must fight for it. And fight they will.
The wall will be removed when they are there. Let's see if they deserved to survive the sieges they have been faced with.

My experience with clowns has been rather underwhelming.
  • Wipe the floor with them
  • ???????
  • Die of blood loss 2 months later due to syndrome dust that can't really be avoided except with traps
  • Tantrum spiral
Gee, didn't see that coming.

Usually against clowns, I send a army of superdwarfs, wait till all the demons are dead and then put these in a bunker where they can rot alone without infecting anyone. Works well for me.

It's just a bit ho-hum when the LEGIONS OF DOOM are as deadly as a particularly unpleasant FB, you know?

One of my speardwarves just punched a clown's head off. If he lives he shall be given an adamantine room, in honor of this achievement.

Before you get too excited, was it liquid/gaseous?

Clowns are nice. I would remove their trap avoid tag and just capture a few in traps, maybe build a nice arena for all your Urist McIdiots to congregate and look at the shiny demons while the Urist McUsefuls close the doors behind them...

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.
