unicorn resist to and after the end
« on: January 20, 2007, 12:52:00 am »

a dwarven caravan gaurd had stayed on the map because of attacking the unicorns and elephants on the map. He has killed four of the unicorns. Buth when i had them hauled to a refuse pile near my butcher shop the dwarves wont butcher the unicorn body. Even though it isnt rotten.

You can't butcher unicorns, ever, by design.  It's in the creature definition.

Why are Unicorns not butcherable, though? I mean, is concentrated purity poisonous to Dwarves?

theyre not pure, theyre full of smurfieness.  and thats corrosive to anyone but elves, the rotten little pufters.

i think its an oversight that unicorns arent good for ivory, but their meat is far to gamey.

edit: actually, thats very wrong.  ivory comes from teeth and tusks, not horns.  extracting horn might be an interesting bloat.

I certainly think we ought to be able to get the horns out once magic is in and there's something to do with them...  but there would be little point at the moment.

My bonecrafters always like to have something new to paste onto random barrels; they are getting tired of bones and shells. Give them gazelle horns, give them elephant tusks, give them sperm whales' teeth!

Unicorn horns could make good spearheads. If their good enough for unicorns, why not for dwarfes?

Alterantively horns could be made into drinking cups.

Anyone that has played NetHack could tell you that Unicorn Horns are very useful things to have.

Since dwarfs depend on being drunk this might be a very bad idea.

I was thinking they might stab themselves or others with the pointy end.

Maybe you could grind the horns down into some sort of healing powder?

Alcohol is a poison, and a fairly deadly one. Pure alcohol can kill you or blind you just by drinking it.

Just because it's diluted with water and other flavouring components doesn't make it less of a poison.

In NetHack, dipping a unicorn horn into alcohol turns your beverage into fruit juice.

What could be more poisonous to a dwarf than that?!? I can certainly understand why dwarves won't butcher Unicorns. What if other parts of a Unicorn has the same destructive effect..?
