Dwarf Fortress community, please grow a thicker skin. You guys and gals represent both this community and this game, especially when you post on other forums. I understand that you are very passionate about the game, but your attempts to defend it are often... Overzealous.

That was an antagonistic first post in that thread, Capntastic. You're leaping to the defense of something you know little about. How does Toady feel about this? Their developers? Why not let them hash it out?

You took some random fan's responses as the developers' answer. You continued to insult them. And in the end, because of the hostile attitude they're looking into changing it. Great job. You sure showed what the Dwarf Fortress community is like.

It's very foolish to think that this thread or the general consensus of the posters in it represent the entire community. That is all.

I dont think discussing about ripping off / inspired by has any use if they state they did it in honor of the great toad >.>

Above what some of the above posters said, I especially agree with Capn's last post. I really want to see this game made, and was mildly surprised when they took 20 seconds of the DF tune. I wasn't surprised because they took it from Toady -- other than just sort of using his forum and playing his game, me 99% of the other people on this thread have no affiliaiton with him. I think Capntastic was probably the second best person to actually stand up for Toady other than himself (given he's his right hand man, or one of). I was surprised they took it because there's so many other places you could have taken a tune from if that's what you were gonna do.

I certainly don't represent bay 12 though, and I hope that any idiots that might have posted here badmouthing the people behind this new games realize they don't represent bay 12 either.

I'd like to see Toady weigh in on this, because if he does have a problem with it, I'd bet he'd rather deal with it himself than have us launch a crusade fueled by righteous indignation on his behalf.

I emailed Toady, he said he had not been asked for permission. So I went onto the forum and asked what they were doing.  That is hardly a crusade, nor is it righteous indignation.  I never said their intentions were malicious or mean spirited, merely that it does not paint them as entirely respectful to the thing they're claiming to take inspiration from. 

Sorry, I didn't mean that as a barb at you specifically for starting that thread over there. But if some of the more excitable posters from this thread migrated over there it could quickly devolve into what I described. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the general tone of the thread, but it didn't sound too farfetched to me.

Anyway, I'm glad to here Toady is in correspondence with the dev's and hopefully we'll get to hear how this was all resolved.

My intent was never to stand up for Toady, he's capable of doing it himself.  My stance was always one of trying to get them to see they could do better than flat out take music.  Especially if they've got a sound guy on staff and are planning on selling the game.

Edit:  To further assert my stance, people going "I'M MAD YOU STOLE FROM TOADY" have just as wrong of a conception of the issue as people saying "IT'S ONLY A SONG THEY TOOK, WHO CARES?".  Obviously those are blunt examples of some of the feelings I've seen people take.  Anger and apathy aren't correct or useful responses to what is a cut and dried ethics issue.
