Master level soldiers
« on: January 19, 2007, 07:44:00 pm »

When a soldier reaches master level (sword master) the preferences screen on the v menu for the dwarf says "This hero need not work" which is great and all, I didn't want to assign him any jobs at that point. But I would like to be able to move these dwarves in or out of the royal or fortress guard, and assign them war dogs.

This is something I'm planning to change at some point.  There's an ancient thread on it somewhere.

Question:  If a dwarf becomes a legendary worker of some sort, then masters a military skill, does it still become impossible to change their job?  Because losing a legendary worker like that seems like a pain (and doesn't make much sense, since a legendary weaponsmith, say, probably isn't going to give up weaponsmithing just because he's also become legendary as a swordsdwarf.)

Yeah, it stops everything.  I think the original intention of this was to stop the dwarf from being assigned to a weapon or armor they wouldn't like, but that was a long time ago, and I never got back to it.  Even the original intention probably doesn't apply any more, though with the personal weapon racks and armor stands, it wouldn't be unusual for a master dwarf to also earn the right to own their own weapon.
