Desktop Dungeons (beta) and other minesweeper variations
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:13:06 am »

Hello !

Well, there was an old topic for that game (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=51058), but I though that the title did not suit anymore.

So, for those who don't know the game yet, that's a kind of 10-25 mn roguelike, crossed with minesweeper. It is tough, and has you to think a bit (however, it is more some sort of tactics rather than guessing).
http://www.desktopdungeons.net

So, for those who liked that funny little game, there are some news !
- A new freeware version has been released. Apparently it just adds one new challenge and a class.
- What they call the full version (a rewrite of the original game, with more graphics and challenges), can now be preordered.
It looks interresting to me...

Also, as I like guessing games, here are some other good minesweeper variations that I found :
- Electric Zombies. By the same team, does not have you to think as much. Maybe it can be considered as a preleminary work for desktop dungeons
- Zombie Minesweeper. Action game mixed with a good old minesweeper
- Mamomo Sweeper. A bit like Electric zombies, you have to kill the monsters, and can guess their strength.
- Escape from the spaceship. Some kind of audio minesweeping...

Just for the record, B12 would rather you necro an out of date topic.

Sure. I have thought of it. But what had me to create a new one is not the age of previous thread, but that fact the title did not reflect what I was about (because other title specifies V014, and my topic is also wider than just Desktop Dungeons)

Well. Maybe it was not the best choice, but well, at least I have tried to do what I thought was most adapted.

I would never have read the other thread if you necro'd it, the OP is almost a year old, and I simply can't tell if anything glaring is missing, so really I would have skipped the entire thread.

I've never actually looked into Desktop Dungeons before, what I heard never interested me, now that I though though, I have to say it does look quite good.

You aren't the Voice of B12. So dont say that all of us want to have necros. Don't be so assuming and self important.

Anyway, it seems pretty cool. I'll give it another look.

Actually, our necroing trend comes from the day toady told us he couldn't manage all the traffic & storage on the forums and closed the anything goes board. So instead of repeating ourselves over and over with countless threads on the same crap. we started reading and necroing to be considerate to toady. It's a sign you're new here.

Just for the record, B12 would rather you necro an out of date topic.

We don't care what you minority think. We necro here. *dons his wizard hat*

At least it's not the very same topic, so I will let it slide this time! *taps his palm with a bat*

Anyway, I haven't played DD in a long while, anything new about it?

I'm a firm believer in that the OP should be relevant.
When the thread is dead for a year (or more!), the chance that the OP is actually relevant in most cases is slim to none.
Alternatively, the OP might be of terrible quality in the first place.
In either case, it is unlikely you'll be able to get the original poster of the older thread to come back and fix it up, so it's easier to make your own.
I don't know why you guys seem to think that it's such a big deal.
The issue with the "anything goes" board is that they were shitty and/or spam posts to begin with.
The Happy/Sad threads in GD are skirting that issue pretty close, I'd say.

I like how nobody commented on the fact that I made a new thread for Trackmania instead of necroing the old one.  Sure sign of the way the forums work, that.  ;)

There is only one forum where I read the OP, and this is not it :) So I don't mind necroing an old thread. On the other hand, a new thread is good, when it's on topic, has relevant information and not bitching about the thread in a recurring flurry of bitchingness, quite unlike what is happening here.

ON TOPIC : I'm not really sure I like what they're doing, especially the most expensive edition (75$ what the hell is this madness) but I guess everyone has the right to profit from their effort. And it is good effort, too - this is a pretty nice game, even though it's much more of a puzzle/gameplay elements abuse game than a roguelike. Though I guess the newest changes aim to ... well, change that.

Not to mention that new fighter icon makes me want to punch him right in the bulbous nose. I kind of hope they change it.

All in all, it's a good game, and I'd recommend everyone get it, because the developers deserve something for their effort.

I actually really like this little game and have been playing it off and on since the original thread came around here. The free version has some updates such as a new dungeon and a new class so there is something new for us to play right now.

I follow the blog a bit and the Unity version coming out soon will feature a metagame that allows you to upgrade your kingdom and give you a reason to delve in to the dungeons. Theres a a bit more changes too such as how items are managed, but I am too lazy to report it all.

Anyone know of any great tilesets for the game? A quick google doesn't find me many I really love. Does Deon have one Where is Deon's?

AHRGAHAGURG I keep making terrible mistakes and getting myself killed. I haven't been able to complete any of the warrior tree yet. I have unlocked assassin though. Damn bandits. I definitely like this game though, unlocking new enemies is pretty interesting.

Any tips for the wizard? I really don't do good at wizard.
