Steam is no longer harmful
« on: January 19, 2007, 06:02:00 pm »

I haven't tested steam since the last patch before the big temperature patch, but I fired up the old steam defense today with the latest build and found that it did...nothing.  A fox cheerfully strolled through about 40-50 tiles bathed in steam, likewise several goblins.  Goblins outside the steam displayed reluctance to enter it, but putting a toe in did them no harm.  A few milled around in the steam for awhile and then walked out, unscathed.

Save available at http://rharvey.home.die.net/dwarf, grab the save_steam.zip.  I tried with the temperature set to both YES and NO in the init file, same result both times.

It appears that temperature-related deaths have gotten a lot rarer in the latest version. My first adventurer was instantly killed by a burst of steam that exploded all my limbs, but when I set a fire to test the new temperature effects lately I had to wander around in the fire for 20-30 turns before dying. I guess steam defenses are no longer viable (too bad, they were cool).

I always thought steam should do some damage(up to yellow) but not enough to kill.

I also was on that opinion. Steam shouldn't kill, and now that we have some temp. codes in, it isn't killing. This is a nice change imo.

Yellow is broken, so you should be cooked if you sit there unconscious for too long.  Steam cooked.

Yeah, all the flows now transfer temperature over time (except the natural lava flow I think...  that probably still instakills because it encases in obsidian).  This is all still in progress though.  Some of it is definitely too slow.

-=Exposure to steam is hazardous. If not properly controlled, steam can cause property damage, serious bodily injury or death.=-

There are even songs about train operaters being scalded to death by steam (yeah it is under more pressure in a steam locomotive, but still)

from: (i could not find some scientific stuff off the bat, but eye-witness accounts are cool too)

Steam explosions can result after a sudden brief rainstorm. Often while hiking the lava field you might encounter a small rainstorm. This is generally no big deal and the wind and heat from the lava quickly dry you off. However, if enough water accumulates in the ground it can be super heated by the lava and suddenly explode in a huge release of steam. Often this release of steam will bring rocks with it - causing an aerial assault. Less likely, but still possible is the steam actually venting where you are standing, in which case you would be broiled alive (which happened to an unfortunate person 2 years ago).

its worth noting that the steam you get from mixing magma and water is also highly toxic.  so its not just the heat, its the noxiousity.

We still have plenty of hardcore defenses imo, the traps are way to powerful anyways. We don't need an insta kill steam.

that, i dont deny.  but wouldnt it be neat for this and other types of gas traps / noxious breath to damage the targets lungs?

heck, you could grow rainbow caps for your dwarves to smoke, that would make them more productive.  but it would slowly and constantly damage their lungs and kill them after a decade or so.

Yep, that is true. When the full military system will be in, I wouldn't mind anything regarding defenses. However!!! The AI controlled nations must also use these kind of defenses, so that when we invade their cities/fortresses etc, we will have to face the same kind of traps/defenses like what we construct in our own fortress.

Maybe not instakill, but steam should still be an option for traps and defenses.  Large amounts of real-life steam are, as others have noted, actually just about as dangerous as they was before--getting hit by it is literally akin to being dropped instantly into boiling water.  Certainly no natural creature should be able to survive more than a few seconds standing in a small, enclosed chamber where a molten lava flow hits water...  Outdoors, where the heat and steam can dissipate, it would probably be much less deadly, but we're not talking about a sauna here.

If you make a small chamber where steam can accumulate, with a constant supply of water and red-hot lava, anything stuck there should be boiled alive in short order.
