No skill/no supply
« on: June 02, 2011, 04:03:00 pm »

Just opening up a topic of discussion.
Has anyone tried embarking in an area with no skills and no supplies? How did it go? I imagine the first step would be getting wood by breaking down the wagon, but would you even get one if you didn't bring anything?

Have a looks: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Challenges#Peasantry

I guess it has been tried several times, and I don't think it is too hard. Yes, you get a wagon ;)

Been there, done that. Actually it isn't that interesting, you just wait till you get your first pick to go belowground. Skill is nice but not that important.

However, doing it without using wooden axes is VERY dwarfy. And much more difficult.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

First command will probably be d-p. After gathering everything in sight, farming can start. Past that, it's not that hard. Try embarking in a terrifying biome, though...

Food, bone and leather can be harvested from the map, the rest has to be aquired from outsiders.

If you want some real challenge, outlaw mining. Any kind of mining. Or outlaw pickaxes, just to be sure. For the whole lifetime of the fortress.

We're watching you, elf-man...

Everyone, start digging out the obsidian from the last magma chamber's occupant!

wrwr, we'll have your room ready momentarily. Care to relax in our all-wooden waiting room?

Its boring, but feasible in most embark zones anyways.

Get everyone to gather plants, use the seeds to plant farms, use wood to create a trade depot. Sell excess to traders to get whatever you need, eventually.

Or just use one log to build a workshop, one to build a wooden training axe and use that to get as much wood as you need to, say, use the farms to create roasts to buy out the caravan.

But wooden training axes used to fell trees is frowned upon.

Doing this on a terrifying glacier will probably not work.

It's usually possible, but pointless.  All you're doing is delaying your fortress a year, maybe two.  There's no big gain or loss, just wasted time.
