New Beginnings
Discovering the twisted wreck that was the back of the colony ship was a terrible blow to morale. Thousands of people missing, tons of lost supplies, and databases, filled with useful information, missing or destroyed. The engines that were still attached to the ship were broken beyond repair, mangled husks through the stress of deceleration. The ship began to splinter into factions when the crew quarters were opened. Dried blood stains and smashed bones told of a battle for control. With none of the crew surviving to shed light on these mysteries, words like treachery and assassins were on everyone's lips. Leaders began to emerge in the fog of mistrust, with people drawn to their confidence and aura of command. Supplies were stolen and colony ships were commandeered as the different Factions prepared for their arrival on E-43C.
But there were not enough colony pods for everyone on the ship, as many of them near the back of the ship were broken or destroyed. At least the people and factions who remained on the ship could take comfort in the hydroponics farm, delaying starvation. At least they had more time to acquire the knowledge and technology hidden away on the ship.
To eyes accustomed to the sickly green colour of earth foliage, the lush vegetation on the planet seemed like paradise. The purple chlorophyll favoured by the alien plants brought a touch of the exotic as the colonists wandered around what would soon be their new homes. Grass-like plants were in abundance, covering the plains like a lush carpet. Even the forests were comprised of giant grasses, bamboo-like in appearance. The air was full of the calls of arthropods, who contested the grasses for abundance. In the oxygen-rich atmosphere they could grow up to the size of a man's forearm. The gill-bearing counterparts of the arthropods swam in the oceans, forming vast schools for protection, their proliferation and docility such that they could be easily plucked out of the water.
Yet for all the seemingly limitless abundance of nature, life would not be easy for the colonists. The seed stock aboard the ESS Pwenet was gone, leaving the colonists without a source of crops until substitutes could be grown from the local plants. Shelter had to be erected, fields plowed, and experimental crops planted. While the labour might be hard and back-breaking, the colonists could at least look forward to a future of ease and plenty, untouched by war and terror.
Or so they believed.
