Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield - Last hard core FPS
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:22:13 pm »

Due to a recent Steam Sale, I have reaquaired Raven Shield.

For the uninformed, Rainbow Six used the be the standard for hard core tactical shooters. You didn't get to hide and regenerate health after being shot. If you were there to rescue hostages and the tangos saw you, the hostages were killed and the mission failed.

Overall the game is great. It has a wide range of missions on wide open maps, decent graphics (for being released in 2003), and plenty of missions. Most importantly, however, it has Co-op, which is the primary reason for this post.

Anyone have the game? Anyone interested in playing?

Oh god I remember playing this on hard. Felt like X-com with all your guys dieing if you forgot some detail in the planning stage. Also, auto-aim (actually in the game. Doesn't make it any easier though) was absolutely mandatory...

thirded, this was a quality game. I never got past the airfield mission

Also check out the early ghost recon games

in both games one enemy you missed could take out your entire squad.

Was fun to play cooperatively. Although I think sometimes the allied AI went full derp and got itself killed, most notably going up ladders.

And I dunno about last. There's still the Armed Assault series, buggy as it may be.

Rainbow Six 3 was the last true Rainbow Six game. Lockdown, vegas and on are just too arcadey and not tactical at all for me. I loved planning out a mission then watching it go horribly wrong, very DF like I suppose. I'd agree with Virtz, ArmA is very a "hard core" fps and if you enjoy RS3 you should think about picking ArmA 2 + OA up sometime.

This game could honestly give out hand jobs for free and people would still bitch.

Problem is that you can't change the plan mid-mission, so if you've ordered your men to go up a ladder, they'll go up, charge of the light-brigade-style.

We never actually made plans during co-op. We just had them follow us. The problem came with the following scenario:
-Ladder ahead leading to platform 3-4 meters above.
-2 meter wall on the left.

One of us climbed up the ladder. The AIs waited for that to complete since they couldn't climb a ladder in use. Once up there, it turned out that behind the wall on the left was a lone terrorist, who promptly shot the climber before he could react. Queue AI deciding to follow the leader and climb up the ladder one by one and get picked off by that same terrorist before the leader got a chance to regain control over one of them.

Can't say it was the smartest move in the first place, but I was too busy laughing afterwards to care. :D

the AI was pretty dumb for both your allies and the tangos. I often completed missions only after about 4 or more trial runs. And usually what ever character i was personally in control of killed about 70% of the Tangos. I usually just got the other squad to clear a few areasw then sit tight rather than going for the objective

Yeah, maybe "last hard core FPS" was a little over stated.

In single player, I almost never used AI squads. If I did it was generally only to clear one specific area of one specific building. They would wait at spawn until I had cleared most of the area, then advance to the area I needed them, then charge in at the same time as me.

I'd still like to play this co-op.

Rainbow six got dumb after the first few games. I thought the vegas one was pretty lame, raven shield is probably the last one they made before it started sucking hard.

I actually have this (on CD's) but have never played it. Anyone know how to install it on vista?

Rainbow Six 3 was the last true Rainbow Six game.

Agreed.  I got both expansions and still have the CDs somewhere.  Was great fun.  I did most of my multiplayer with 1 and 2, but 3 was the last one that was any good.

Too bad they removed the tactical elements, I would enjoy playing missions strictly from the command view sometimes.  Let AI run squads, and just give the go-codes.

Othertimes, just run-and-gun, and treat your squad members as extra lives.  It was a fun way to have it both ways in one game, if you were in the mood for carefull planning, or just some quick action.

I have it through steam, but it works pretty good on Windows 7. I have to go into task manager and disable a processor to make it play and even then it crashes with a "General Protection Fault" at a random point during the mission.

I guess that means it doesn't work "pretty good" at all... Anyone have any ideas?

By looking around I haven't seen any way to fix it (I should say, I HAVE installed it, but it crashes before the menu).

Curiously, although I wasn't able to run it before, I installed it normally on Vista with no problems today. :/
