Requirements for "Give Water?"
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:17:20 pm »

Hello,

My fortress is going though its first tantrum spiral at the moment mainly due to my half my army being burned alive and the other half either bleeding to death shortly after or slowly dieing of thirst. Plus my Dwarfs really get upset when they have to watch a friend decay. ='(

I'm wondering how far my dwarfs will go to get water... in particular my team of doctor dwarfs that's only responsibility is to take care of other dwarfs even though everyone has the option turned on. I have a surface fortress thats well guarded and allows me to bring in migrants and caravans without opening my fortress up to goblin ambushes. Then a few z levels below I have everything else.

So I've been digging for a water supply under ground. I found one built walls and secured the area and as I was digging the well I was notified of some fire breathing monster with sharp horns and claws wanted to play. So far my army of 10 axe dwarfs and 5 mark dwarfs armored in steel haven't even been injured in combat. They killed titians and 2 other large beasts. So I sent them to attack.

They killed the monster but half were cooked during the battle. Four bleed to death shortly after and the rest slows died of thirst. Now the annoying part is that I see them giving their lives to build this well. (That happens to be about 40 z levels lower than my fortress.) Now no one is giving them water. =(

Guess it's to far away. I'm trying to decide of I should bring the well up to my fortress or bring my fortress down to my well.... If I make it though the tantrums that is.

Dwarves frequently neglect that duty. It is really far down the priority list. It is usually best to build the well in the hospital.

If you dont want to pump the water up and dont want to fill a resevior via a bucket brigade you can channel 1 tile wide hole all the way to the water source from whatever z level you want the well at. Just build up/down stairs next to the channel tile and channel straight down to the source. The stair is so your miner doesn't get trapped. A well will draw water from an infinite amount of z levels above a water source so long as the path is not blocked.

One of the dwarfs walked in front of Thor to get a better view of the prye, and Thor kicked him irritably into the middle of the flames, which made Thor feel slightly better and made all the dwarfs feel much worse.

Do you have buckets for the dwarves to carry water, and water is more than level 3? Any lower and they don't draws from the well. If there're no accessibility issues ( everyone can go to and from the well) and you have a bucket, check to see if the well's forbiddened.

Make "nurses" who have all duties disabled except tending wounded and feeding prisoners/patients.  Because it's such a low-priority task, it's only reliably done when you have a lot of idlers or dedicated nurses.

This. Also look for Dwarves with high empathy and sense of duty. Actually I leave them some jobs, like furniture hauling, and use DT to temporalily giving them other jobs, depending if I need haulers of nurse more.

Wow... I didn't know about bucket brigades or that the well would draw water from any z level... Thought it had to be one above the surface for some reason.

Thanks for all the idea going to try and get my dwarfs something to do other than tantrum.

In therapist, helps to put your high-empathy dwarves in one military squad.  Not to use them for war (though letting them train while off-duty isn't a bad idea) but rather to have them all grouped.  You can then quickly toggle their work duties in case they need to stop hauling microcline -right this instant-.  Also, it doesn't hurt to dress your nurse corps in all white robes and gloves, just sayin'.
