Why not release 31.26 now?
« on: June 01, 2011, 06:22:32 am »

Unless I am mistaken, Toady One has developed:
-New town designs, including sewers and catacombs
-Necromancers
-Dissectable undead
-Tombs with undead guardians and traps
-Werewhatevers
-A bit of major bugfixing for all of the above

So either:
1.) Toady wants to finish some other critters before releasing 31.26, or
2.) Toady has found some bugs that he wants to fix and hasn't mentioned.

If 1, I'd be fine with 31.26 now, but I can see Toady's point of view and I'm sorry to have wasted his time. If 2, I suggest that you mention any major and/or entertaining bugs you find if possible.

3.) The town maps aren't done yet, and Toady wants to still add furniture placement and markets.

So it's a combination of all three, assuming that sponsorship animals fall under 1.), and that future bugs he works out pre-release fall under 2). Since he has mentioned that furniture placement should happen with haunted houses, 1.) and 3.) might be too intermingled at this point, and it seems he wants to "cap" town development with the actual markets.

(Also, it won't be 31.26, but 32.01 or perhaps even 33.01)

Since this is the most significant release since 0.31.01 I imagine he wants to complete as many items within the theme before releasing it.  I mean, there's a ton of stuff in here...I think by this point there's so much in there already it's best to release it once those areas are done rather than defer them and make a partial release.

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I want market  :'(, that's the core element of my suggestions. I can go too far until I know how exactly 'market' (market zone, market building, a tree of market buildings?) is implemented.

As much as we'd all like to see the new version now, I'm sure we'd also like to see it without any major bugs and with each of the new features feeling fleshed out.

And now for the old cliche;

It'll be done when it's done

Toady's longer dev benders usually involve tearing up huge swathes of code and then reshaping them.  This is not an altogether clean process, and usually involves, after doing his work, going back and smoothing out all of the seams and rips he's left behind.  Were he to release now without finishing his work and damage control, the new features would almost certainly be tricky to really access, given entire frameworks of integral code would be still kinda hanging around dangling loose.

I'm not aware of any bugs; that is actually why I suggested noting major and/or entertaining bugs.

...That is an interesting analogy, as well as an enlightenment into Toady's style.

Ah...This is the kind of not-previously-aware-of knowledge I was looking for.

The only reason I don't want the game to be released now is because whenever Toady releases a version he has to bug smash.

I would MUCH rather he start squashing bugs once he is completely done with his creature update... then release it now... squash bugs... then finish up creatures... release... then squash bugs.

Though personally I wouldn't mind him finishing the "Unique Body type" he spoke of in his talk... unfortunately I think I am one of the only people who would be willing to just up and go "sure, take two months for it", so I can't exactly hold people up to that standard.

I'd prefer Toady has the release more-or-less stable, instead of churning out something nigh-unplayable just for the sake of getting it out. If we have more waiting right now so he can do that, then that means we'll have less waiting for the updates afterwards.

Right. Either way the bugs have to be fixed. From a development view, if you take a little bit longer to make larger chunks of code for your testers to digest (especially if you're reusing that code in multiple ways and places), it's a lot easier for the inherent bugginess to be found and excised. If you're making lots of non-bugfixes, and releasing lots of different versions with incremental changes, the advantages of version tracking all but disappear because you have no idea if the bug was due to something you just put in or something lurking from a previous release. There's no time for the bugs to be found and narrowed to a specific release.

It's usually not too difficult to track a problem down once it's visible, and it's usually pretty obvious to figure out when the problem first started, but IMO it's just smarter to go with larger releases, and as a result have somewhat longer testing periods on something that isn't constantly being added to. It's only moderately more exciting and much less often for us testers, but probably much less of a headache for Toady.

I still would have rather had the cities and the night creatures to be separate. The night creates don't really interest me, but I'm damn curious about the cities.
