Build me a shrine worthy of a goddess!
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:13:14 am »

Rather, help me with inspiration as to what to do for the same. I've just gotten an awesome artifact: A goblet called Churchenjoyed engraved with a worship scene. Taking the suggestion at face value, I have elected to carve out a new shrine to the deity depicted thereupon: Arkoth, dwarven goddess of wisdom, a la Blackstone's Divine Quarter. How would you, my fellow fortmasters, approach such a task? Any and all suggestions are welcome!

EDIT: Information going in.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The artifact itself. Arkoth is the goddess of wisdom and apparently nothing else, depicted as a female dwarf. She is worshipped faithfully by both the artifact's creator and my baroness. Being the deity of wisdom, I think I shall locate the bookkeeper's office in the shrine as well. Arkoth is, by the way, the dwarven word for "prophecy."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here's the site, just east of my meeting hall. I'm thinking of putting it in the southern wing. I'm thinking deep colors and all that, with the blessed artifact in the middle, perhaps in front of a statue of Arkoth herself, if I should get one. Does anyone know of a way to manipulate what an object will depict?
(On the right is a shrine to Inod, god of fortresses, hence the crenelations going in. Magma will follow soon. The galleries behind the crenelations will be engraved and play host to fortress-related relics, mementos of the fortress's history (ideally even pieces of !!clowns!!), and, of course, magma.)

Screenshots of artifact and goddess, please.  Also, a screenshot or two of the area that you're thinking about using as the shrine location.

Create a temple dedicated to music! The goblet is OBVIOUSLY the Goblet of Gore!

Curves, to start with.  A round room, preferably a dome if you have the room.  Statues, definitely, preferably as a garden so that dwarves will party pray there in their free time, but if you can't stand the meeting hall distraction now that's understandable.  Pools of water, perhaps, 3 or so in depth to leave them shallow and calm.  Perhaps deeper.  One idea would be to make a circular temple, and then dig a crescent out around the edge, filled with water.  The dry part would be the entrance, and the wet part the back of the temple, growing deeper towards the back a god 2-4 levels deep.  Stairs can be involved here, letting way into the lower temple if you so desire.  If you're feeling more dungeon-y, you can add some tunnels under the water (nulled pressure optional) filled with treasure for adventurers to explore, or simply for your own artistic hording skills.  Add statues, and 1 table with two chairs, to make a "coffee shop" type of peaceful situation.  Perhaps 2 tables to make it symmetrical.

Build a huge weapon. I was thinking hammer at first, but I think spears are more fitting.
Also, it's uncanny how similar Arkoth is to Armok. This goddess should be universal dwarven canon (like Boatmurdered, Cacame, Morul, Cpt. Ironblood, etc).

Wisdom and weapons don't mix.  Fortresses and weapons, sure!  But wisdom is serene, calm, and precise.

I must agree with Girlinhat on that one.

One of my engravers carved my speardwarf slaying a forgotten beast in the shrine to Inod; I think I'll put the spear with which that was accomplished in there, if it's any consolation...

Either way, this may have to wait a little while, as a vile force of darkness has arrived!

Quote from: wikipedia
In Greek mythology Athena or Athene (play /əˈθiːnə/ or /əˈθiːniː/; Attic: Ἀθηνᾶ, Athēnā or Ἀθηναία, Athēnaia; Epic: Ἀθηναίη, Athēnaiē; Ionic: Ἀθήνη, Athēnē; Doric: Ἀθάνα, Athana), also referred to as Pallas Athena/Athene (play /ˈpæləs/; Παλλὰς Ἀθηνᾶ; Παλλὰς Ἀθήνη), is the goddess of wisdom, civilization, warfare, strength, strategy, female arts, crafts, justice and skill.
Athena can have the weapon shrines she wants, she's also the goddess of warfare, strength, and strategy.  Arkoth is the goddess of wisdom only.  If she were the goddess of wisdom and victory, I'd agree, but it's just wisdom so your point is moot.

She is depicted as a female DWARF. Weapons it is.

There is a Manga out there that has a nice out look on Athena, considering that she was born from the Mind of Zeus, the other gods thought that she must be wise, but all she showed was Pure unhindered strength, every action she would use strength so there came a feeling that all that filled Zeus's head was Combat and Strength, and that he wasn't a Wise God as everyone thought him to be. Thinking on his feet, he turned it all around explaining how Athena used her strength in a wise way showing that there is wisdom to her actions, despite the fact that Zeus was at that time, sweeting bullets...

Zeus pretty much did whatever he wanted (especially with women), but he was still the king of gods so everyone shut up. (Or the ones that didn't got fried with lightning.

Athena is the goddess of defensive warfare. She encouraged the use of strength and skill in times of war for defensive or just purposes (Lawful Good). She wasn't a goddess of "pure unhindered strength", that would be Ares and his might makes right philosophy.
