His/Her Upper Body is Gone
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:08:46 pm »

Something fishy is happening in the new fortress of Truechanneled. After just days of setup, our Trader/Leader bled to death. Examination revealed that her upper body is gone. Suspicious, the area was surveyed for local wildlife, happening upon a herd of elephants miles away and a lone male Tigerman. Later, that same Tigerman was found dead, upper body also missing.

A few weeks pass without incidence, but suddenly another death is reported, this time the Doctor. He had bled to death and his upper body is missing. Still no aggressive wildlife and the elephants show no signs of Boatmurdered bloodlust.

Any ideas about what is behind these random acts of murder?

You can try hitting 'r' and looking at the combat reports. They'll tell you who's been involved in combat/hunting/sparring, as well as an Adventurer Mode-style breakdown of every step.

I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

First thing I did when I found out. Absolutely nothing. I'm baffled, is it possible that starting Dwarfs may embark with some sort of fatal disease or syndrome?

Of course, the Tigerman died... implications are unsettling.

Sounds like syndromes, you should check the health screen and for any unusual materials ( Such as FB ichor/blood), on the dorfs as well as critters.

The upper body is always missing on a corpse. This is a bug, last I checked.

The bleeding to death is what killed them, not the loss of an upper body. But that does sound like a syndrome. If the tigerman was hostile, he likely hit the mayor with a poisoned blow dart (Assuming tigermen are one of the animalmen who do such things). This poison then killed the mayor, and eventually infected doctor as poisons/syndromes are wont to do.
The tigerman may have poisoned himself, though I'm not sure if that's actually possible.

Alternatively, something else is causing the syndrome. Check the unit list periodically for any forgotten beasts or titans who might have been in the area when you arrived.
I can't remember if it was a mod where I saw it or not, but I think there are also venomous snakes. Those could also be the cause.

Would starting Dwarfs come with syndromes attached? I remember reading about a king who arrived and promptly keeled over from old age, but previous health problems are something I've never experienced from my starting seven. I remember having a couple immigrants missing some pieces, but never the initial seven.

The reason migrants arrive missing body parts is because they are pulled from the legends. The starting seven, as well as the first two waves of migrants, are created out of thin air.

It's something on your map. Maybe check your reports to see if the dead people weren't involved in combat recently.

Fresh Fortress, so no FBs or Titans, yet. Could be snakes, but the only one that I know of containing venom and such is the Helmet Snake. Thought those were underground pests?

Tigermen do not carry weapons or wear clothing, so couldn't have been a dart. They are generally not hostile, either, though I once had a couple females attack a tamed male Tigerman. It was strange, that one.

In any case, there were no combat reports. I just got my first but that was about a dog getting into a fight with a leopard.

This might be a repeat of the old 'acid rain' bug.  If you embark in a scorchingly hot area, and it rains, the fat in your dwarves will melt, and then they will bleed to death and die.  This would also explain the death of the random tigerman.  If so, it's going to keep happening to any creature that is stuck aboveground in the rain.

How hot is your map? 'Melting' body parts bleed a lot so they might have bled to death from that. And every dead person's information lists 'his/her upper body is gone.' :P

Can you still view the personality page of a dwarf who has died? You might be able to get some clues by looking at the state of affairs right before they died.

Alternatively, it could be heat-death. Dwarves bleed when caught in fire or magma, and I think also when they're wearing excessive layers in a hot environment.
What season did they die in? Also, check to see whether water sources are evaporating.

It occured to me that the acid rain bug might be back, but those two and Tigerman were the only deaths so far. It's been a couple months now.

Month was Spring and the area is either Hot or Scorching. It's part Tropical Shrubland and part Tropical Coniferous Forest. Funny thing is, a whole herd of elephants have been roaming around since embark and we've had some leopards pop in. No other deaths aside from a stupid dog who attacked a leopard.

They're dieing of the heat.
Try to undress them by forbidding their clothing (I'm not actually sure if that will work). Be sure to give them all cabinets so they don't strew their clothes everywhere. This way when it does get hot there is a higher chance of them not sweating blood.

Fat-melting would be easily fixed if Toady were to fix the melting point of fatty tissue, but the bug tracker report on that hasn't seen any replies. I'm honestly surprised that more work went into fixing the other causes of the bug, when something as simple as one or two raw file values is also obviously to blame.

It could also be a ghost do you have any ghosts in your fortress? If so try to take care of them first.
