Refridgerators

Owned items are a headache. Clothes get randomly claimed and no dwarf will touch it until the owner gets a cabinet in his room. Newer players who don't know this may end up with a critical door jammed open with a sock. Well ok, just having a spacious room is enough - dwarves will dump clothes on the floor. The other type of frequently owned item is food. This is worse than a sock as it rots and causes miasma even if it does get put in a room.

It probably took me too long to realise what dwarves needed: chests. As a bonus, it seems the food doesn't rot while in a chest either. Now I can happily tell my military to load up heavily on food with no worries if I have to change their squads.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

As dwarves will not claim trade goods anymore, the only use for chests is for storing owned food.  I didn't know this kept it fresh though, that's interesting...

Military dwarves are not guaranteed to store food in chests, so doors are still advisable. I had a funny situation, back in time when I was equipping dwarves with backpacks, when one soldier dumped a meat piece on his chest (which was only half-full, so he did it only because of congenital laziness) and a month later, when off duty, sat with a new piece of meat on the said chest. In a room full of miasma. He wasn't happy, but he finished eating.
