Lets Play :: Etrian Odyssey, NDS.
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:29:28 am »

So, not like many noticed before but I traded my PSP in and got myself a DSLite.
(No I didn't want to Hack the thing to play other games, I didn't have any more love towards the thing, ok..)
Anyway I discovered this little Gem hidden amongst a Discount table for under $20. And on closer inspection I discovered that it was Atlus who created this game. For those that don't know, Atlus is the maker of many popular games/franchises, such as Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Shin Megami Tensei, Tamra Center and even Demon Souls. And I am sure that you may have a few others stashed away in your Games Collection. I myself have too many too, and I never even put the two together. Anyway...

Etrian Odyssey is the first of three NDS games, the second and the third I will be searching for till I get my hands on them like I do with Harvest Moon games. It is a Dungeon Crawler with a Very Loose story, an interesting use of the Map by allowing you to keep track of it yourself as you make your path through the Labyrinth and is a very FUN game, in the Fun way we enjoy Dwarf Fortress here in this community. It can be very punishing at times and quite challenging at others, the fact that you could be thrown into a battle well before you are ready for it is a good example as three of my parties have discovered recently, ALL Party Wipes on each event...

I found the Web Site that Atlus made for it, as they do with many other games they produce and publish, and here is where I get into the juice part of this Lets Play. Here is the site, http://www.atlus.com/etrian/

I will be attempting to make a Lets Play with this game, by finding a Good way to get images from my DS, most likely a camera and photo editing program and share with you all my Blind playthrough. I haven't even gotten past the first True Boss which is moments away from the Entrance to the SECOND FLOOR! So everything past that is new and undiscovered for me, so don't be spoiling it on me. I will be making a Guild with all of you as its Members, giving each of you a turn through the dungeon as I go along and creating squads from the roster as you ask, if you want to be Money Makers by gathering Items from Monsters or Gathering Nodes, which is the only way to make money in this game other then quests, say so, you want to be Boss Hunters, So be it. I will be attempting to level you all equally and such. BUT I will be playing with a set rule though. If a Party member dies in dungeon, I am only able to Revive him if I have an Item or Spell that allows it, if I leave the Dungeon while he is dead, he remains that way, is stripped of his equipment and then removed from the Guild. If a Party Wipe happens and there is no more to replace the party, then its a Do Over from the start.

So basicly I am looking for folks who want to come with me through this Game which was released back in 2007 (Prob USA Release date, or maybe Japanese) as I play through it for the 'First' Time, First being said loosely due to the fact that I have already played for a bit, but yeah. Party Wipes...

Anyway, everyone is free to create their character, able to guide how they want their skills to be set and so forth. Check the Website that I posted and click on 'About the Game' tab for a better look into the game for those that seem interested. Buy anyway. Lets get started...

Character Creation ::

So. The party consists of Five folk who can be distributed into 2 ranks, Front and Back, each rank can hold at most 3 people. So regardless the 6th position remains empty. At the start there is all but two of the classes available, the classes needing to be unlocked, Somehow, are the Ronin and the Hexcaster. So here are the remaining classes. Don't forget to pick a Face for your character from the Website, Check 'About the game' and Characters then choose the class you want to check up on. I'll be posting the Unlocked Classes when they become Unlocked, so until then, pick a class. choose a Face, pick a Rank and Finally, You have 3 Skill points to distribute, make sure the Prerequisites are right though, also include the first 5 levels of skill points after the Free 3...

Landsknechts :: Your Sword/Axe men. They are the main attacking power of most Parties, not all that great on the defense but their attack power can be great. Strengths are, High attackpower and able to attack Multiple Targets, Weaknesses are, Low Defense and few Non Physical attacks.
Spoiler: Skill List (click to show/hide)

Protector :: Your Tank class, they can protect your ranks by taking the damage for them it seems, also able to heal. Uses Swords and has a ton of Shield abilities. Strengths are, Excellent Defense, high attack power and healing abilities. Weaknesses are, Defense abilities can be Gambles, NO Elemental attacks.
Spoiler: Skill List (click to show/hide)

Survivalists :: Archers and Sneaks, they are the ones that can do a lot of status effects to foes, also the one with all three kinds of Gathering Skills. Strengths are, Effective Status Enhancements, useful woodland skills. Weaknesses are, Low attack power and No Elemental attacks.
Spoiler: Skills list (click to show/hide)

Dark Hunters :: Whips and Poisionous attacks. They are the ones that do most of the status aliments to the monsters, just too bad they all look like they are into S&M, I mean the leather and the emo hairstyles. And thats just the guys. Strengths are, Does most of the Status Aliments. Weaknesses are, low attack power and Defense under normal circumstances.
Spoiler: Skill List (click to show/hide)

Medics :: White Mages of this game. Seriously, they are the most important class I feel at the moment, if only they had more speed on them that everyone would die before they could heal anyone. Strengths are, Versatile range of Healing skills, good attack power. Weaknesses are Low Defense and HP.
Spoiler: Skill List (click to show/hide)

Alchemists :: Black Mages, with Science. Their attacks read Formula so clearly they are doing Science, Fire from magnisium and that shit you don't put in water or it explodes. Ah Highschool Science. My Teach made Gunpowder and showed it off on our last day... Strengths are, Second to NONE elemental Spells. Weaknesses are Low EVERYTHING, (Ahem) Attackpower, Defense and HP.
Spoiler: Skill List (click to show/hide)

Bards :: Sing us a song mister Piano Man, sing us a song to boost our attacks!!! Yeah who doesn't love bringing a Musician who sings a song to make everyone tougher. Strengths are, Can increase Party's effectiveness. Weaknesses are, Not very effective in Combat (YA THINK!?)

Edit2: Hmm might want to change to a healer. Gonna look em over. Nah, just changed my protector to be a bit more heal-y.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

The Dark Hunter's skill list looks a bit dodgy, if I'm honest.  :o

hehe... that's part of what I like about Atlus. Their games seem to fit a particular theme, then all of a sudden you get a class that specializes in whips and has skills called gag, shackles, cuffs, ecstasy, and climax. NIS does this too, sometimes. The Disgaea games are full of innuendo (and more... blatant references), though they fit as part of the universe there.

Bread the Alchemist

Wymar the Landsknecht
Robin the Protector
Simmura the survivalist

Oh dear, no medic. This is be interesting considering that there will be no healing, looks like Medical Supplies will be needed...
As no one pefered any Ranks I will slot them in as I feel is just.

Wymar Front
Robin Front
Simmura Back
Katerina Back
Bread Back

So, I have been fiddling with my Digital Camera and taking shots of my screen, I think I have found a good setting but it seems to be all pixally at times, but regardless I can't seem to get a good method. One way would be to get the Screenshots by playing along with an Emulator, cheated so I can get past the monsters and shit so I can Screen the Events clearly. But part of me doesn't want to. Unless someone can suggest a good way to get a good screenshot of the DS screens and a way to edit out the 'bad' quality that comes from it, that would be epic. I'll post up a Screenshot of the Title, and depending on how you all feel about it I will look into other ways...
