Hmm.....
Kobold Axuillary: Kobolds who've pledged thier lives to a given fortress, and now serve it as haulers, mischief makers and auxillaries. Due to thier simple minds, they will follwo orders to the letter, and they are suicidally protective of thier adoptive homes, and will fight to the death to defend it if need be. These kobolds have effectivly determined to become dwarves through battle.

I personally see a one-sided "friendship", where the kobolds want the dwarves to be "friends" (as in, let them pilfer food from the stockpiles voraciously, and not smoosh them just as voraciously.), but expect to give nothing but "friendship" in return, failing to comprehend that hard labor to produce the food they are stuffing themselves with is well... hard.

Perhaps they could be coaxed into watchdog/alarm system duty..... but any relationship with them would be strongly on the parasitical side. Cats hunt vermin, and dogs can be trained for war.... but what are cutebolds good for, other than just being cute?

Perhaps if they gave dwarves happy thoughts that prevented tantrum spirals or something, or activated trap levers on intruders........

I just can't help but see the "war" episode of fraggle rock unfold in my mind, with the idea of brainwashed kobold zealots....... ("this young fraggles, is a weapon!")

Having recently finished Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad series (an interesting mix of low fantasy and sci fi) I can help but wonder if there could be parallels between Toady's kobolds and Pratchett's Nomes.

Both races live on the fringes of society.  They usually live fairly short lives in absolute squalor.  They are extremely good at hiding and thievery.

However (without spoiling anything) the Nomes are rather intelligent creatures and their poverty is primarily cultural.  (Language barriers with the dominant sentient civ is the secondary cause.)  Could the kobolds be in a similar position?  Individually they act smarter than goblins.  At least while sneaking they can avoid traps, swim, and unlock doors.  And when sneaking they seem to be the least suicidally stupid of any creature.  Once detected fear obliterates what wits they had, and then kobolds act as dumb as any dwarf.

I am not going to push the comparison much further, because of the 14th century rule.  But it is amusing to think of the kobolds as the main character of a science fiction story that has yet to be told.

I must now add that Kobolds are evtremly good at running away, and give credit to the 4 out of 5 that escaped my soldiers and the human caravan.

The one that didn't was just darwin'd out of existance by a fishery worker who was bringing home some freshly caught mussels.

Dear unpronouncable kobold thief, you will be missed. But your iron knife and that cave spider silk wife beater/underpants combo will buy some dwarven ale for my people.
