Everywhere seems to have reptilian Kobolds. Bah, to me Kobolds will always be bipedal horned dogs, as encountered in Baldur's Gate...

Being a long-time D and D player (1983) I am inclined to agree on this.  Kobolds will always look like little horned dog men to me.

Here's what they look like to me

Kobolds, huh?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Can't say I know why everyone seems so enamored with them.

I don't think they're cute, but I do like having them exist as a race in game...I actually came across this thread while searching for a way to get them to live past world gen.  I -was- convinced by this thread that they make sense as dwarfy pets/companions (as long as they can be broken of their thieving, violent ways), but that's all.  I think the cutebold thing is a bit too "omg so kawaii!!! ~^_^~" for my taste, but whatever.  This is the internet; you can find everything from sexy darth vader to Spengbab, so nothing really surprises me anymore.

In DF, they don't have a snout. You should see them in Armok 1, that's probably kind of what they look like in this game.

Spengbab

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they qualify as Forgotten Beasts.

it's hard to turn your back on almost twenty years of d&d indoctrination.  kobolds will forever be diminutive lizard-dog people to me.

I actually came across this thread while searching for a way to get them to live past world gen.

If you haven't found that way yet:
go to raw/objects/creature_standard.txt
find the entry for kobolds
put in [NO_EAT] and [NO_DRINK]

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!

Their language resembled barking in D&D, that's all they had in common with dogs.
Considering their lifestyle, they should be more like rats. They may be scaly or horned, or with tail, but they are not reptiles and not dogs, duh.

EDIT: unless you think jackal/fox instead of typical dog/wolf/whatever. And rats are omnivores... hmmm...

I feel sad that we're letting DnD define our views so restrictively.

The raws don't provide enough data to reach a conclusion, as they have an identical body to every other biped, but I'm personally in favor of the dog-like variety.

C'mon, we can't even decide on our dwarves... look at all the female beards threads and whatnot.
Actually, that is good because DF is supposed to have no canon - its every world is unique and the traits may vary.

Well, most worlds are defined as a "region" actually... implying "one part of a world".
