Right now central, but it's a work in progress.  I'm moving to a less central layout and entirely more complex fort.  It will have multi-level panic rooms periodically, stocked with food and plenty of booze, and a few beds and such.  Still, the overall theme is one of peaceful opulence, as this fort is in the theme of a grand spaceship.  Not that it is a ship, but that it has the ideology "I can see you there, but I am above you and separate, better."  It's going to be suspended above the map with its shadow housing a devastating drowning/magma/obsidian chamber that should probably qualify more as a terraforming machine than a defense mechanism.  The pump stacks and power requirements will be enormous, and if possible I want to run some dwarven water reactors in the horizontal tower itself, likely on the roof or upper levels.

For above ground forts, what I do is I make a huge channel, something like 30x30 or 20x20. Then I use an end as an entrance and make a normal fort. When I am self reliant, I build a huge wall around the channel, leaving a trap tunnel open. Then when that's done I make a huge pyramid in the channel and move my fort in there. One of my goals is to make an upside down pyramid, and on top of it make a big hotel, on the top of which spews out water or magma into the channel many zlevels below

Exact reason why I deeply dislike that stone.

Not only you get "You have struck microcline" spam nearly everywhere when you dig (hell it was even worse in 40d), but microcline tends to absolutely RAPE your normal fortress color scheme with an incredibly clear blue.

When you change it to dark grey or red (according to the wikipedia article it can be clear, brick red, green, pale yellow or white) it is much more bearable though, but red makes me think of blood too much.

Isn't that the proper dwarfy mindset, though?

I tried default tiles for the first time and they were kind of amazing except it messed up something and y axis has different scale than x axis

btw top left is my army. i was just having a parade
