Show your aboveground fortress layout
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:26:45 pm »

How do you you usually build? do you make cities with walls? without walls? Do you use city grid or not? I want to see how you guys build aboveground just to get more ideas etc. heres one a pic of my recent towns with an interesting layout, though i was not satisfied with it but it was just a try out.

if you post an image, take it from ground level

This fortress was nowhere near finished but you get the idea.

I don't have any pictures of mine, unfortunately, but I was working on a fort for a while that had multiple open-air courtyards walled off and connected by drawbridges. the central courtyard had my main dining hall on the ground floor, several offices above that, and the stairs down into the stockpiles and workshops below ground.

because each courtyard could be isolated using the bridges, during sieges I'd raise all of them except the one leading into my militia's courtyard from the outside, and the siege would funnel in and die horrible axedeaths. when traders showed up, I'd open the trade depot courtyard temporarily. (when the traders were elven, I'd seal them inside to watch them berserk and fight their caravan animals to the death)

the problem I ran into with the walled-city method of aboveground fortress building was that occasionally goblins would arrive riding giant bats and glide right on past my military.

I've never in my DF "career" had been sieged by mounted units. QQ

...The obvious solution is to encase your entire fortress in a clear glass terrarium to stop getting sieges. Oh, and make a nice ramp up to the top, for cleaning up bat droppings (like socks and goblinite) and for use as a death drop.

The obvious solution is to make a glass floor at the top of the world, deconstruct its support, and cavein the world.

I shared this sentiment until a flying forest titan swooped past my traps and down into my agri-floor, where it chased butchers and farmers about until my poorly armed and completely untrained army struck it down.

Mine are more tall than wide, towers instead of sprawling forts.  But, with a 20 wide tower and 10 levels high, that still looks very short on any visualizer.  My current fort is 21x21 ground floor with a 10 floor high "tower" that is actually a smooth curve.  It's incomplete, and the Fortress Defense sieges are giving me trouble, but I'll be damned if some tigers and imps stop my progress!

It should probably menace with spikes of Microline.

All kidding aside, that looks pretty awesome.

I prefer wide because you can see everything at once, also no scrolling z levels up and down :)

True, but, I tend to work in layers.  1-5 is barracks and soldier lodging.  5-20 is bedrooms, both commoner and some noble.  Above that is dining halls and workshops.  It's chunks of fortress.

Does your fortress have main shaft or does it go spiral kinda like my microcline fort? So the invaders won't be everywhere -  they have to take it room by room.
