But see the thing is they don't need to wear armor like American football, because even with pads, stepping on someone like that is still going to break that leg, and injuries in places other then the leg is a lot more rare. In european football people aren't tanking up and trying to shoulder their way through 12 people who are trying to tackle them. In american football where its a lot more likely for you to be hitting someone with or get hit in the head, shoulder, chest, back, etc thats why they pad it up.

And then there's rugby, the European (/rest of the world?) equivalent of American football without kilograms of padding.

I don't pay attention to rugby so I wouldn't know, but I guess thats why everyone says rugby is crazy.

I find that American Football tends to have better game balance- salary caps, less emphasis on free agency and so forth. The whole thing feels more streamlined and polished.

I for one will rise above the Football/Futbol debate, as it is rather like holding a Minecraft/DF debate.

I always like when people point to Amercian Football "armor" as some sort of wuss mechanic. It isn't, the pads are there for a reason.

Back in the early days of AM Football, people died. Not like, 5 years later, they died on the field. You are talking about 250 pounds running full speed at you, leading with its shoulders, trying to knock you over.

Even with all the precautions, there are very serious injuries and it is still a very dangerous game. Look at how short the careers of AM Football players are.

I don't have any idea how this stacks up to Rugby.

The way things are going, yeah, that's where we'll be. Honestly, I hope that is where things end up, as otherwise I predict the violence inherent in the game will continue to be removed.

Some simple rules changes could've stopped most of the deaths years ago.

Did they seriously never consider just not head-butting each other?

I mean AFL is a pretty fast and violent football code, but I can't recall anyone ever dying. Though i'm not a sports follower, so it might have happened sometime in the sports 130+ year history.

EDIT: Apparently no deaths ever in AFL games, there's been the occasional death (not many) in a local amateur games, but none in any pro level games.

It hasn't happened in a very long time, as far as I know. I think it hasn't happened since the 20s or 30s.

The problem with rule changes is they don't eliminate accidents or dirty players. The league has imposed rules like carting players off the field if they lose consciousness at all and suspending players for helmet to helmet hits on defenseless receivers but even with these rules you have a very dangerous and violent game.

Anyways, the whole point of that topic is to laugh at anyone who says “My sport is more hard core because we don’t wear pads!” Very few sports can claim to be as dangerous as AM Football. Rugby may be one of them, I don’t know enough about the rules to comment.

If futurefootball was played in exoskeleton power armor and crap I would watch the hell out of it.  Rocket-powered ball, jetpacks to slamdunk the ball with, all that stuff.

Otherwise Bloodbowl is the best football.
