I've been thinking of trying this game out for a while, but despite it being free I thought I'd do the research before investing any time into this.  Has anybody else had particularly good/bad experiences with this game?  Can you recommend any unofficial expansions or mods to the ruleset?
What kind of replayability am I looking at here?

I have had very good experiences with it, a lot of fun.
It has lots of replayability, no two game are the same.
About mods, I would suggest trying the baby version when begining (5 players per side, no shots from outside the area, and smaller field). Until you get more experience points at least.

By 'american' football I get you mean "armored rugby", where players are too scared to play vanilla rugby and rather use armor and helmet

And if you think the real football is soft... then you clearly have not played it. Specially south american style.

I assure you, the American Football players would love to be armor and helmet free. It just so happens that the NFL enforced their use when they noticed that football players who didn't wear the gear were all getting brain damage and dying in a decade.
