Not counting my dwarves, there are about nine pages of living creatures.  There are chasm, lava, and river creatures.  They aren't in direct contact with my dwarves, and they'd probably kick my butt.

That sounds like a lot of creatures, but I'm not really sure what would be "normal" for a map of that size. It'd probably help matters at least a little if you could reduce the amount of creatures, but it sounds like that's not feasible just yet.

I'd gladly try out the save if you like, to see if I have the same problem, but I'm guessing I probably will. I could also try looking around the fortress for problems, but I'm not really sure I'll be able to find anything, and you may well not be comfortable with sharing your dwarves and fortress with me, but I'll be happy to take a look.

I'd be happy to have you take a look.  Do I need to zip up data/save/region1/* ?  That makes a 23MB file, which is pretty big.  Is there anything else needed?

Yes, just zipping up everything in the data\save\region folder for the world you're playing should be fine, unless you're using any mods. It probably won't work the same for me if I don't use any mods you may be using, so I'd need those too, if you're using any. 23MB sounds like the right size for a region folder, do you have anywhere to upload it to?

No mods.  Here's the file.

Thanks!

Okay, I get "User downloading session limit is reached. Please try again in few minutes." every time, even though no download has attempted to start yet. I guess I'll, um, keep trying again in few minutes.

[Edit] It finally downloaded.

No idea who else would be downloading it.

I find my game doesn't stutter, it lisps.

I haven't found out the cause yet. Did it start stuttering before or after you used Reveal?

I think after... but I used Reveal almost immediately.

Okay, just checking. I had a feeling you used Reveal almost immediately anyway, considering the places you're digging.

I tried slaughtering out as much of the wildlife as I could, digging to all the inaccessible areas I could, and killing off most of the dwarves, then reclaiming, but the stutters still kept happening.

I reloaded the original save, tried something else, and now I stopped the stuttering. Now all I have to do is go back and show myself how I stopped it.

I've noticed the stuttering has stopped on at least four separate occasions, each one being after a separate reload. I'm not sure what stopped it, but one time it just stopped after a while of me not doing anything, so either something I did earlier had an effect later, or the problem just fixed itself.

It seems there weren't any goblin ambushers around, but there were some goblin thieves (snatchers) and kobold thieves lurking around to the south of the fortress, in the area near the lava pool. Maybe they had something to do with the stuttering.

I tried some other things in addition to what I mentioned earlier, like uncluttering workshops, removing stockpiles, making extra stockpiles and creating an additional garbage dump to allow items marked for dumping to be chasmed. Most of these methods gave the impression of stopping the stuttering at one time or another, but I couldn't get any of these to reproduce reliably, so it was probably coincidence.

I have a feeling it was the lurkers by the lava pool, or wherever else they may have been. I tried hunting them down but couldn't usually seem to find them when I wanted to. Anyway, if you've played the fortress further in the meantime, I hope the stuttering's stopped. Let me know how it's going if you can.

Wow, thanks for trying all that.

I've played it farther and gotten ~35 dwarves now, and the stuttering is pretty much the same.  Not worse, anyway.  I've got enough dwarfpower I can probably find and kill the snatchers, maybe that will make a difference.

I've also gotten some messages about antmen, snailmen, and snakemen all fighting each other.  Maybe that's slowing things down?  Did you kill of those guys?

No problem, I'm just disappointed I couldn't determine the cause.

I also thought at first that the antmen, snailmen and snakemen might be slowing things down, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Yes, I did kill them to see if it would have any effect, but I had to cheat a little, since I wanted to find the cause of the problem as soon as possible, really.

The stuttering continued even after they were all dead, and other times the stuttering stopped when I hadn't killed a single one of them, so they don't seem to be the cause, as far as I can tell.

It seems most likely that the stuttering is due to some sort of pathfinding.  Perhaps Toady could take a look?  :)
