Losing lots of seeds?
« on: January 18, 2007, 05:51:00 pm »

I just downloaded the new version of the game and started a new fortress.  The cave river flooded when my miner hit it, so I started making farm plots in the muddy hallway.

My farmers would go to the food stockpile outside the walls, "pick up" a seed (except there was no flashing dot), walk to the farm, and then spam me with "Job item lost or destroyed" messages.  Nothing was getting planted but my seed count was going down.  The seeds were in barrels and it is a Warm climate so I can't see what's destroying them.

By the end of the spring, the farmers had managed to plant maybe 5 seeds out of the dozens I'd brought.  When they were successful, they carried the flashing dot.  The rest of the time, they would walk from stockpile to farm empty-handed, then I'd get the "lost or destroyed" message at the end of their trip.  What gives?

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

Dunno.  Is there a save where this happens?

I had the same thing happen to me.  I remember that seeds started being planted properly after it stopped raining and/or the month changed.  I'm sure I can get it to repeat the bugginess and get a save while its happening.

EDIT:  Heh, beaten to it I guess.

Seeds are also being destroyed during "Store Item in Barrel" tasks.  Planting and storing seeds works fine when the weather is clear. The seeds only get destroyed when it's raining.

I'm getting this bug too, my seeds are all in bags outside(if that helps at all).

I got this same issue while trying to cook or plant seeds recently - the cook would go to the seed barrel, get the seed (no visible dot for the seed), move to the kitchen, and then cancel the job.

So far this has only occurred when the food stockpile is outdoors. I'll do some testing now to see if I can reproduce it (and generate a save), and then reproduce it indoors.

Okay, yeah, it's the rain.  The rain constantly hits the outdoor units and barrels with water, and dampens the inventory items of units.  Seeds are safe in barrels.  When the unit picks up the seeds, they wash away.  This comes from the previous use of these functions for floods -- it made more sense there for seeds to be included in the "destroyed by water" category.

So, I need to change that, and also the fact that the dwarves don't notice that the seeds are washed away until they make it all the way to the farm.

For now, moving your food (or just seed) piles inside will solve this problem.

This is also affecting raw fat, and also possibly tallow, as of df_23_130_23a.

So basically this means outdoor butcher's shops auto-clean themselves of fat?  Dang, if we could get the chunks to run out automatically too, that'd totally cut down on the clutter.  (Unfortunately, I bet the dwarf doesn't notice that there's no longer fat to pick up if he grabs a haul job for it before it washes away, so he walk all the way there, and then scratches his head, wondering "Now, den, wut ezzattly wus it I's here fer?  Bugg'r 't'all, drinking time.")

However, pratical cleaning using the elements sounds nice.  I can just imagine a chunk and bone sluice running down from the shop to the outside river.  It's a beautiful sight.

Hey, leave my fat alone. My dwarves love their *mule tallow stew*.
