Barracks position and ownership?
« on: May 29, 2011, 03:25:05 pm »

What does this do?  You can make someone the owner of a barracks/armory, or assign it to someone's position.  Is this for armory purposes, to allow one soldier to stash his gear in one specific location, or what?

For that matter, does anyone actually use armories?

Are you referring to the possibility of assigning the "store gear" flag to individual dwarves as opposed to a full squad?

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

I have no idea.  When I assign a squad to train at a barracks, the p - Positions option comes up.  Never bothered with it, and the tutorial didn't give me any help :P

Maybe it's a relic from the short-lived armory master noble position? IIRC they were supposed to be a manager-type that would organize the gear assignments and upgrades to dwarves, but it was a horrible mess and breaks/drinks/sleeping orders meant soldiers would barrel off naked if the siege showed up during upgrades.

The position was eliminated almost immediately, and I never want my soldiers unarmored, so I haven't looked into that stuff either.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Nope, arsenal dwarf didn't use that option at all - he just needed a "modest office", a room defined from a chair. After he had worked a bit in his chair "managing uniform assignments", the soldiers would go take their gear from wherever it is and put it on.
I was wondering what do positions, indiv/squad equip and assigning barracks do, but swapping the options seems just to do nothing.
i guess it's just a placeholder for future use, like many many other things in game.

The armory option seems obvious to me.  If you set individual storage there, and have a uniform that is "civilian clothes while off duty" then that dwarf should deposit his armor in his individual armor, and retrieve it from there.  However, in my brief experiment trying to have a part-time military, my dwarf would take off his armor, place it on the armor rack much like a cabinet where it's actually in inventory, and then a nameless hauler would take it off the rack and dump it in the stockpile.

Try again, but this time disable everyone's hauling labor.

This at least proves that that piece of  armor is not claimed by any soldier,if wear civvy clothes off duty. Besides, at least if you have them patrolling a dangerous area, where you do not want a civvy to go collect it, they will go to the armory, and store it, hopefully a safe area, for collection later. I am curious, if you have squad A training, and squad B no scheduled orders, with same armory, will squad A when there training month is complete, and squad B starts, will squad A start storing their armor, will squad B rush there to equip?
 That has potential!

In theory yes, you can "hot bunk" your armor.  At the turn of the month, one squad will start training and the other stops.  They go store their armor and then leave.  The other squad comes and picks up that armor immediately after.  This can be used for weapon training in particular, if you have two axes in your fort and order dwarves to only train 2 per squad on alternating months, they'll drop the axe for the next squad to pick up and train with.
