The sword represents the medical caduceus, and has a 56" blade of hardened and tempered 440c high chromium stainless tool steel, double hollow ground and mirror finished. The guard is hand-carved 304 stainless steel, 25% chromium and 8% nickel, mirror finished and hot formed into spiral snakes that wrap around the handle core. The snakes tongues are split and wrap around the sword's cutting edge. The snakes eyes are solid Australian opals, representing the manifestation of life. The core is banded red jasper and hematite, chosen to represent tissue. The pommel is stainless steel with silver bezels embracing a solid polished gem of blue obsidian, into which is engraved the medical caduceus.

Urist McMiner chipped away at the rock before him, the heat rising from it in waves, clearly a sign that he was but a few meters away from the flowing molten rock that powered the rows of forges back at the fort-home.  He paused to wipe yet more sweat from his bushy brow - how long had it been since he last drank? - and continued his work.  But here, something in the rock looked different.  Something bluish and shining... could it be?  He had heard of it only in legends, that fabled metal that was stronger than steel and lighter than wood, the mythical adamantine.  Eagerly striking the stone with new strength, he realised it truly was a raw lump of that glorious metal!  His heart leapt in his chest as he imagined how he would be praised for finding it, and what wondrous creation would be made from it.  Perhaps even he himself would be given the first piece, a feather light pick able to carve through rock like it was cat tallow.  His striking increased in intensity as he felt the raw adamantine coming away from the rock it was embedded into, reaching almost fever pitch when suddenly -

A hiss of air escaping, followed immediately by a horrifying scream!  His sweating skin turned ice-cold in a moment.  He had also heard about this in legends, about miners who dug too greedily and too deep, and brought ruin and destruction on their homes.  Of unnatural monsters and ravaging death, with the only salvation being to flood everything with magma and water until the whole mine was encased in solid rock.  He noticed his breath was caught in his throat, and wondered if that would be his last.  Trembling, he pulled away the adamantine to reveal an eerie looking tunnel behind it, filled with a smoky red light that was as welcoming as an elf and a million times more deadly.  He leaned out over the edge and looked down, and at that moment his eyes were blinded and his brain turned to catatonic madness, for he had seen what could never be unseen:
