Gen a world with Frequent minerals.

Problem solved. If you do that, I will give you a clownite battleaxe for every embark you find that DOESN'T have any iron.
You owe me 5 clownite battleaxes.

I like the iron scarcity.  Whenever I have a problem with it, I just mine out all the goblinite and trade for it.

I rarely use iron, since I dislike using it for weapons. Steel isn't that big a deal for me, I can't say I've ever made any in the several years I've played, I prefer to use Marksdwarves and Complicated machinery to Destroy all foes.

Ridiculously complex water-powered circuits powering and triggering multiple situation-specific defenses that shift based on need is pretty dwarfy to me.

No, it's not. It's not magma-powered, after all.

I have a section that's magma powered. It's too slow for my needs typically.

Do everything needed to make it faster. Or just use it anyway.

I'm absolutely drowning in cassierite in my fort.  I remember that stuff used to be stupidly rare.  I've got a little hematite.  Just a liiiiiiiiitle.  And a tiny bit of copper.  So still much better than my last fort which had nothing but tons upon tons of useless lead.
