No iron
« on: May 29, 2011, 02:22:00 pm »

Is anyone else suffering from this in the latest patch? I've had about 5 embarks now where I've never found any iron, then I used DFHack to check if there is any, and there's is NONE at all. It's really ruined all 5 of those embarks, and it's really starting to irritate me, so I'm wondering if anyone else is having similar issues.

Thanks.

My embark has 0 iron and almost no trees. I've been moving along fine just using bronze weapon traps and silver hammers. Now my military has plenty of steel from imports (goblin and otherwise). Iron seems to be rarer than previous, but it's very possible to do without for a time.

That said, if it's a must, you could try setting metal frequency higher in world gen and embarking on sedimentary layers with metals (plural) listed, to get a better chance at iron and coal.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Set scarcity higher. Presto.

I've done this, and still, the only place that has iron is mountains. Even, then, embarking on a mountain, is not guaranteed. Also, I feel increasing the scarcity shouldn't be something that's nearly mandatory for iron. It's going to confuse and put off a lot of people who aren't familiar in modifying parameters, and they'll be wondering why they aren't getting any iron at all.

Eh, the learning cliff is a cliff for a reason, but I'll admit you have a point. Does your civ at least have iron?

Even they didn't, no. But I'm not sure if this is a bug or something, because I know iron was plentiful before. I'm not sure if it's an intended curve in the learning of the game.

I find iron ore about half of the time when I look. It's pretty rare, but more realistically than painfully so.
Recently, I've found loads of tetrahedrite. There are other metals than iron; while steel is basically the best, other metals will usually do. A certain metal's always guaranteed, but there can be some problems...

If you're still looking for iron, don't forget goblinite; it can be difficult to harvest at times, but it's better than nothing.

Honestly, I have no problems with iron with vanilla and default settings. Iron is almost everywhere in my world - more than 50% of embarks had it (limestone mostly). I've never seen gold though, only bought from caravans.

In my current embark (second in total, and the first "serious" one) I have no iron at all, and neither my goblins do.
I buy and melt EVERYTHING made of iron or steel from merchants, problem solved.

I am surprised how people complain about not having iron underground just because it's necessary to make steel. Simply try to do your best with what you have, this is the point of the game after all, no?

If you want to cheat there are countless way of doing so - so why complain about iron, of all thngs?

I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

I haven't mined on my current, so it's possible there's iron there--but it's not anywhere else.  Neither the goblins nor any the traders have any of it.  Fortunately, the dwarves can somehow still create steel, so I have some of that...  but otherwise its the bronze age.

I embarked right next to a human fort.
Dug down a little, struck some magnatite.
3 in game years later, its nowhere near depleted.

Set mineral scarcity lower in advanced worldgen. Learn to use bronze and silver. Make use of goblinite and trade requests. Cheat like a bastard.

Warning: Cheating like a bastard may cause feelings of disgust, disappointment and boredom.

I'm having a mixed bag. There defantly is something odd going on with world gen though, seems like tetrhedrite appears anywhere, and everywhere, regardless of stone type. As well as that, i've had lots of layers of sediment with no magnetite, Though out of 10 forts i've managed to get one with magnetite in the sedementry layer.

edit: most of this was with above scarce, or the max, mineral density

Gen a world with Frequent minerals.

Problem solved. If you do that, I will give you a clownite battleaxe for every embark you find that DOESN'T have any iron.
