Damn steel cockoaches!
« on: May 29, 2011, 01:19:41 pm »

So, I had FB visit:

So far, my military of 90 has been engaging it for three months, loosing men very slowly (5 soldiers) and getting nowhere! Steel weapons and whatnot. Damn resilient bug!

Considering that fort defeated some fifty megabeasts so far, this is surprsing. I had FBs that melted when touched. I had FBs that melted YOU when touched. I had flying BFs with dust that instantly killed, i had FBs with slow acting poison that spread and instagibbed nearly whole population months later, but this ... THIS. This sounds like my poor dwarves are being slowly defeated and there is nothing that can be done.

Well, now Roc has came. My whole military is still in caverns, civilians are armed and ready to fend of surface attack...

Damn steel cockoaches!

I recently had a forgotten beast that came... exceptionally early in my fort's history (before I got a working military!). It was made of salt and had poisonous stings. It killed three dwarves (one legendary miner and two generic people I drafted to fight it) and my fortress went through an entire siege before it was killed :P

Well, if you're thinking of using an atom bomb against it, don't bother.   8)

Sounds like you might just have to squash it.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

This, either blue weapons or retreat and lure it to cavein trap.
I wonder if it will die if dropped into magma sea/molten rock.

If you don't mind cheating, use dfliquids to drop a dollop of magma on its head and see what happens. If you do mind cheating, drop a dollop of magma on its head with 2 years worth of construction and machinery.

I have little magma experience, but doesn't the game refer to steel as "magma-safe"?
Either way, it'd make a great story.  Your military lures the monster into a room, and you fill the room with magma, sacrificing their lives to kill it.  Only it survives.

It'd also make a great movie scene.  Scared dwarfs watching from a distances as a gigantic steel cockroach rises out of the magma to hunt them down.

I don't think he would want to sacrifice 90 dwarves to squash one bug...

But then again...
Anyway it wouldn't work. FB's are magma-immune.

It's a cockroach, you know what to do: Squash it!

Bonus points the cave-in makes the FB fall into the SMR

A steel cockroach? Thats awesome. Its like fighting some horrible alien war-machine.

I keep getting squishy FBs that bleed and die. I don't mind the piles of meat they generate on death but its pretty anticlimatic when a random miner caves its skull in with a copper pick 5 frames after they've announced themselves on my screen.

Not sure what I'd do with a steel cockroach. Collapse a roof on it or assault it with axedwarves, or lure it down a long corridor with ballistas on your end, I guess.

He is still alive.

Sadly, no blue metal on this map.

I have 16 legendary axemen/legendary figters, so axes do not really work either - nothing got chopped off.

I could try ballistas, I suppose, And cavein or magma could work too, but all theese options seem to require some sacrifices.

But Right now, I am thinking about weaponizing him. He makes excellent live target practice, basis for REAL danger room, I suppose cavein-cage trap could work, then release him inside 1x1 room surrounded with fortifications. Thinking about safe setup for melee.

I've seen multiple posts saying that FB don't get knocked unconscious, and that it needs GCS web to trap them. Best of luck though!

How can you not have bluemetal? Did you set the world to gen without HFS?

If it survives and is swimming in the lava, pour water on the lava, and it'll be all over.
