Arizona Cops Shoot Former Marine In Botched Pot Raid
« on: May 29, 2011, 07:11:27 am »

From our good friends at mek-tek: (keep up the good work MT, if you ever get a shirt or a hat with just the Logo and not Mek-Tek.com I'll buy that if I ever have enough money; the logo is sweet and would look good on a Tall T shirt or something but I don't want to advertise to absolutely everyone that I like Mechwarrior Video games, it scares the boobies away usually. That doesn't mean I wouldn't tell my buddies what it is when they ask)

The raid....it sucks but it's a scenario we're familiar with these days. People in America own guns, police are scared to death of getting shot, people grab their guns on a no-knock warrant, police shoot people with guns.

The cover up is just mind blowing though. What the fuck is in Arizona's water these days? I know border violence is getting pretty extreme, but seriously, when did it bring the Gestapo to town?

Personally, I can't wait until someone gets crucified for this. They just blew away an innocent marine who actually made it home in one piece, and and are now trying to smear him in the court of public opinion while sealing the details of the case.

Quote from: Original article
Moreover, if this was all about breaking up a dangerous home invasion ring[...]

So, in an attempt to break up a dangerous home invasion ring, the Pima County sheriff's office begins invading homes in a dangerous manner, doing so in a way that makes it impossible for a good-faith effort to surrender to be made, leaves their victim to bleed to death, and covers up the whole thing afterward.

Makes perfect sense! After all, we wouldn't want the victim to be alive afterward. He might sue.

Something I've noticed is that the American police are growing increasingly estranged from the populace. Both police and civilians have a strong "us vs them" mentality. There seems to be a sense among both of them that the other party is out to get them.
There also seems to be a sense that this is the natural way of things, although I could be wrong here.

I did find it ironic that they claimed (after the incident) that he was part of a gang that home-invaded people while dressed as cops (though his name apparently appears nowhere on any warrant or anything, and no uniforms or anything was found at his home).

So, people in the region have been home invaded by armed, fake police.

But, when the real cops bust your door in, you "should have known" they were the real police.

Yeah, the story has more holes in it than the guy they shot.

It's an unfortunate situation where circumstances sucked and a mistake was made. This sort of thing happens, but covering something like this up is wrong.

Hm... this is definitely a horrible case (the questionable raid with no apparent warning, the coverup) but I'm not sure how relevant some of these details are to the actual incident.  I mean, sure, Guerena had his safety on, but would it really have been possible for the SWAT team to see that...?

Quote
The police opened fire, releasing more than 70 rounds in about 7 seconds, at least 60 of which struck Guerena. He was pronounced dead a little over an hour later.
...I'm kindof impressed that out of those 60 shots, not one of them was instantly lethal.  Huh.

The SWAT team said he fired first, and that they'd seen the muzzle flash from his gun. That's why the safety is relevant.

1. Regarding the safety: The entire justification for them shooting was that they were fired on. If the safety was on and the weapon remained fully loaded, this is impossible. Thus, there was no justification for the police to return fire, as there was no fire to return.

2. Either they were criminally negligent for the lack of warning because they did not have legal justification for a no-knock assault, or they did have legal justification for a no-knock assault and were criminally negligent in not making an attempt to keep the neighbors out of the line of fire. There are supposed to be very strict rules and regulations on how SWAT teams operate so that no officer or civilian is placed in unnecessary danger.

I saw part of the helmet cam footage from them, at the begginning one of the SWAT team members yelled "Lets get some!".

So the police are still a bunch of murderous thugs with no regard for lives outside of their ranks? Everything sounds like status quo to me.

And what's worse, they did it on a drug raid. So this would be a travesty even if they hadn't shot him for no reason.

Great.  The police can now raid any home at any time, plain clothes or not, warrant or not, without warning, shoot my pets on sight, shoot anyone holding a gun or knife, deny paramedics access to the dying victims, and claim they were searching for drugs.  And then cover it up.
