Yep. Maybe you should eventually get diseases in your stronghold and you must search for medication.

Squidi.net posted a very intriguing model/design theory for a massively multiplayer sandbox zombie game of sorts, which sounded pretty sweet. It's a long blog post, but you might dig it:

Solifuge, please try to keep your posts appropriate for all ages, because that link goes straight to game dev porn.

I don't know, I kind of wish all zombie games would be erased from existence already. Left 4 Dead/Killing Floor were fun for a while, hell I still play KF with my roommate, but then every single game jumped in the diseased stinking swamp of zombies and things are getting silly.

I guess I could tolerate a medieval third person zombie survival game. Or a viking zombie survival game, with added runesmithing or some other magic system. Yeah, I would play that. A zombie game with a modern setting, however? No thanks.

Actually, I dont think the Minecraft engine would lend itself well to a really good zombie survival game. Just the combat seems a bit iffy for that.

That's true. But the construction mechanics would be quite nice, although they would need to be made harder to do.

Most zombie games go for a modern setting because it's more "shocking" to see something you're familiar with, such as people in T-Shirts and jeans, large cities, et cetera turned into something twisted and deformed.  I think the modern setting has been done to death as far as First Person Shooters and Zombie games go, though, since most of them are done using the same formula that's been used the past ten years.  We need something different.

A Steam Punk setting would be awesome for a zombie survival game.  You'd have guns, swords, explosives, blimps, planes, flying cities, robots, and maybe even a coherent plot line!  The cities would be industrialized enough to have lots of access to different supplies, materials, and a broad range of magical doodads, and you expect the protagonist to be good at throwing random stuff together (It's Steam Punk: Everyone's a genius!).  Throw in floating cities, an extensive crafting and skill system, and viola!  Instant success.  I'd totally pre-order a game just based on that premise.

That would get my money too. Maybe not on the pre-order, because I don't pre-order anymore, but as soon they give us something playable. About a skill system, it's nice, but there's the danger of making it too grindy.

Couldn't you do this with some kind of halflife mod or something?

I'd mention Dead Island... but it isn't really a shooter (though I don't REALLY believe them when they say no guns)

Fort Zombie was an abomination.  When wolves attacked the studio that developed it and ate everyone there it was considered proof of the Gaia hypothesis, and that the Earth actively rights itself when put off balance.

Dead Island has guns, they're in the trailer.  Dead Island is also not a survival game, but Borderlands with zombies.

Zombies feels like overdone, I do live survival horror but zombies become too known too quick,
Maybe part of the RL could be DF like night creatures.
Dead space was scary for the first hour because I had not seen things like the necromorphs before, then it became predictable.

The problem is the Zombie Survival Genre went further and further away from survival until it actually just became a shooter with zombies.
