Any tips on starting as a Count in Spain?

Seems that in order to do well, one has to break free from their liege.  But the Muslims will kill the player if they are a single count.

Spain is a pain in CK, i'd say gain a close, strong ally (France), don't let spain douches fight against each other (all independent Iberian douchebags united under a ruler or in an alliance) to have a chance and pray. You can not pull this one out on your own, unless you game the system.

You could also conquer something far north, north-east from Iberian peninsula so you will survive. But IIRC attrition will not be enough to stop those uber legions that will march at you.

One thing I learned the hard way was the importance of balancing attributes between your character and your courtiers.

As I recall, upkeep doesn't stop the AI from doing anything.
YOU, on the other hand can very well be stopped.

Although since "gaming the system" is so ridiculously easy, you can beat almost every enemy.

I couldn't figure out how you guys went broke so quickly.

Then I discovered that you agreed to send your troops with the king. 
And he will keep them forever since the AI is stupid about troops.

Were currently debating whether to start again, it was suggested we start again using DVIP and as a smaller nation. I think this would be wise based on the events of my rule
