I've always loved RTS' where units seemed to actually be clever and interacted with the terrain autonomously when it was to their benefit - Company of Heroes kind of does this; Heroes : Soldiers of WW2 does it too if you set your units to autonomous (which almost always results in their death, but there we go.) Having a bunch of adventurers hide behind pillars when archers appear or climb up walls to avoid earthquake attacks would be mondo cool!

If it was a top down platformer... Sure. If it was a side scrolling RTS... Sure.

If it was a top down platformer... Sure. If it was a side scrolling RTS... Sure.

Why not ? simple enough to build a game like this with two modes. Top down main map, side scrolling dungeon mode. Plenty of games like that.

e.g. a classic example is the "commander keen" series. All you'd add is a couple of "follower" units in map mode and some battles, adjust the balance to have a bigger terrain map, and there you go. You can argue it is going to suck, but it's easy to implement.

We already have two modes. Your adding a mode within an established mode without consolidating what that exactly means.

The insides of dungeons and battles are already a sidescroller.

The Commander Keen Series didn't use "Two modes" in the way your thinking of. It had a map view where gameplay doesn't happen.

Hold on I'm not suggesting anything to add to the game being considered. All i've ever said is "it's possible to combine X and Y" which has nothing to do with the game you guys want to make. Saying i'm "adding a mode" is conjecture since I never recommended this mode be added to this project, just said it "could be done". You never responded it "shouldn't be done", which might have merit, but responded "can't be done" which has no merit.

Couldn't care less what u guys add, I just get annoyed by ppl repeatedly using the same silly arguments to dismiss points i'm making.

I've specifically responded to your "it's impossible" statements, which has been every statement barring you're most recent one, where you did try and link the reasoning into the design of the game in this thread. before that you were just repeating "overhead maps and side-scrollers cannot be intergrated" which is plain nonsense.

I've pointed out that it is entirely possible, and not overly difficult to implement.

Exactly what choices the Keen games gave you in overhead mode is not relevant. Above ground battles could have been easily added.

You can argue that it's not needed for this project, which I agree. But saying it's not physically possible to implement is just a silly way to express it.

Really?

Are you sure about that? because I said that something cannot be an overhead AND a side-scroller at the same time. As in... On the screen it cannot be both at the same time. (unless you have two windows... but that would just be like two different games connected to eachother and that isn't what you siad)

Well that makes your previous statement totally irrelevant to what I said and described.

I was giving your statement the benefit of the doubt by a reasonable interpretation. Seems I was wrong.

I described a "two mode" game. The fact that it can't be both modes at once seems totally irrelevant to everything I said, and is a rather odd line of argument. Why would it need two windows?

Who proposed two modes at once? not me. Modes are sequential. that's how they work. lots of games have them.

I'm sorry I'm not following this logic at all? Overwrite what suggestion exactly? I said what I said. Which was an idea for a top down battle-map and dungeons which switch to side-scrolling. Nothing more or less. Implying I said something else is a straw man argument.

An arguement is a statement supported by other statements.

More like miscommunication. Quite common on da web.

I guess i'll just have to build my dating-rts-side-shooter after all. I'm might give the player a helicopter as the tie-in between modes, because I used to like a game similar to "Choplifter" (which some older friends had on Apple II computers, it look like choplifter but way cooler stuff happening, can't seem to track down the title - EDIT: finally i think I found the game in question, and there's remakes! yay)
