Kind of looks like Oregon Trail: Dwarf Fortress.  Must be the bright primary colors.

I think most people get upset because Dwarf Fortress is kind of a unique game satisfying a niche market, and then people come along and make their "own" version, pretty much making it "Dwarf Fortress, but with X".  If you going to take ideas from another game, do something more than better graphics and slightly different game play.

As it is, people are essentially making copies of DF before slapping a limited number of their own ideas on it.  I don't mind people having pet projects and messing around with code, though - They're welcome to do that.  They can even make and release their own games if they want to, as long as it's original.

But a little tact and explaining what exactly they're doing would go a long way.

All I'm seeing are mobs moving around on a map and mining out tiles.  If that's supposed to be a DF clone, the author's a fool.

Once you can make a turing complete computer in it, then it's a DF clone.  Generating procedural storylines would work too.  Until then, he should get his ass off YouTube and work on his damn game because there's nothing to brag about yet.

On another note, I like the comment on the youtube comments about Goblin Camp and how it came at a bad time.  That project is still going strong last I saw, and strikes me as a "what if Henry Ford made DF" - less story/craziness and more attention to industry and efficiency.  DF will always be my fave, but this genre of unabashedly complex games does benefit from diversity.

Wow, you guys are blinded by your own fanatic defense of Dwarf Fortress. This game actually has potential, it can grow into a truly unique game that can be on par with other games of it's type. I, for one, would actually like to try and play this game if it gets released to the public. If we had it your way, Dwarfs?!, this game, Delve Deeper (or whatever the hell that game is) and maybe even Goblin Camp would be off the gaming scene forever.

Just because this game has dwarves and looks slightly similar to Dwarf Fortress doesn't give you the green light to shit on it over and over.

Because working on a game in total silence is the best way to drum up community support. You've gotta start somewhere.

This looks like it could be interesting. I don't mind people taking inspiration from DF, because more games like DF are always welcome. I also don't mind people attempting to outright clone DF, because they'll never catch up to Toady anyway.

Indeed. It will be difficult to reach the level of dedication Toady show on his game. Maybe with a large team they can catch up.

He changed the title to say it wasn't a DF clone, saying that it's "inspired by Dwarf Fortress" instead.  It's not a deliberate copy, as the original title implied.

From the games you listed only Goblin Camp is similar to DF, and it has no dwarves :P. Kinda weak argument.

Dwarfs?! and Delve Deeper are the games which will never look like DF, you can try demos to see it.

Again, this game is not a clone. It is inspired by DF and we know nothing about it, so there's nothing to brag about. But people, you know people, people will always find what to brag about.

P.S. I personally found those "human merchant" sprites to look silly and funny :P. Why would you take a random sprite of a random (popular) tileset and use it as your base creature sprite? Especially since it's a human merchant :P.

The sad thing is that the author calls it "new game" while I see no game there yet :(.

You're right, but apparently this community couldn't tell the difference and started shitting on it.

That's a wide brush your painting everyone, including yourself with. As far as I remember from those threads the few whining where the few always whining and overreacting. How about all the ones simply not caring that didn't post? You are way too busy pointing fingers yourself.

Maybe I am, maybe I'm also just wasting my time or digging my own grave, but nevertheless, the community is very bad at telling apart inspirations and flat-out clones of Dwarf Fortress. That is what I am trying to convey.  Yes, generalizing the entire community was a rash decision, but my point still stands.

As a general rule, when the dev posts a video under the banner of "This game is like Dwarf fortress" rather then at least giving it a name, and mealy noting that the idea came primarily from DF, it stands to reason that is is likely to be a clone and nothing more, with no ambition to stand on it's own two feet. Should this very game decide to man the hell up and do what it wants to do, and still be DF inspired, I will be very happy.

And you point is to stir up people by being rude and then going "Look, I'm right!"?

Well, honestly I see so many people that scream "Oh my God, DF clone! Look it has dwarfs and they do stuff!"

It actually seems that if you have any kind of Dwarf in a game, its a DF rip off.

If you have digging, its some kind of df rip off.

If it has lava in it, its a df rip off.

And so on.

I was reading where someone was saying Dwarfs!? was some kind of df rip off, when it CLEARLY isnt. So I can see where that dude is coming from. More often than not, you will see people from here raging about how much a game is a df rip off, even if it isnt.
